Michaela Weston | 9 comments Rapunzel’s Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale is a quite interesting spin off of the original tale of Rapunzel that I have been commonly familiarized with since I can remember. In my opinion this novel is the opposite of the classic fairytale we envision where the hero saves the weak little girl by a kiss or some other act of “bravery,” as the novel starts out by Rapunzel breaking herself out of her home, and then the tower she was trapped inside of by Mother Gothel. She defeats many dangerous battles alongside her accomplice Jack who really does nothing except for provide her with support and encouragement. Through the journey they take in attempts to save Rapunzel’s real mother from the wrath of Mother Gothel, and save the rest of the world from Mother Gothel’s taxes and ultimate domination due to her growth powers.
All in all, I really connect with how naive Rapunzel was at the beginning of her adventures. Once she was out from behind the wall, and out of the tower she was no longer sheltered from the evils of society and the “real world.” She could not believe how malicious and evil people were, the same holds true for me when I got out of my private school and was put into a public school setting quite abruptly my sixth grade year. I was around the same kind faces, and kind people who were my family for roughly six years and then my whole world was taken from me. Although I made the decision to not go to the private middle school an hour away from my home, I was quite shocked at the reality of public school and how much different the kids treated me and others around them. I remember the initial shock, and I think that is something that I was able to really connect to in this story. Although the graphic novel was a bit difficult for me to read due to the style, it was nonetheless engaging and enticing! I couldn’t put it down, I read it all in one setting and was over the moon at the end of the book (I won’t spoil that for you).
