(summary) Mibs is turning 13 which means she has come to the age where she will receive her savvy, a special gift that her family has all received at the age of 13. Mibs starts to notice that wherever she goes, someone wakes up. Mib starts to think that her special gift might be able to save her sick Poppa.(59) (analysis) Mibs is a Dynamic character. She changes throughout this story while on her adventure to save her Poppa. When she hops on a bus delivering bibles at the church her birthday party's at to go wake up her Poppa, she doesn't know yet how much she is going to change because of this experience. The preachers kids Will and Bobby come along and Mibs brothers Fish and Samson. Mibs notices Bobby’s angel tattoo on her back. She starts to hear a voice in her head that sounds like its coming from Bobby, but Bobby isn't talking. (page 66) Then she keeps hearing two women's voices in her head arguing while around the bus driver Lester. She isn't sure where they are coming from and why she is the only one who can hear them. (page 78) Lastly Will gives her the birthday present he got for her, colored ink pens. She draws a sun on his hand and all of a sudden the sun starts talking to her about what Will is thinking. She jumps back and tells him to hurry and wash it off. (106) That's when she realizes that her Savvy isn't being able to wake people up, but she can hear what other people are thinking through their tattoos or drawings on their bodies. This is a big change for Mibs. Learning how to deal with your Savvy is a difficult thing and takes years and years of practice. It's especially hard for her when they stop to eat and the diner is full of bikers covered in tattoos. She feels so sick and dizzy and just wants to scream because she can't hear herself think. (pages 156-158) But one of the most difficult challenge she goes through is realizing that she can't save her Poppa. And worrying that he will never wake up and there's nothing she can do about it. But when they finally get to the hospital, and when she goes to see him, she remembers his tattoo on his arm. His tattoo talks to her about what he is thinking and because of this she finds the way to wake him up. Because of all these challenges, she changes with learning about her Savvy and realizing how important it is.(378) (opinion) I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a very interesting story line and the characters are very compelling and it was a lot of fun following them on their journey throughout the book. It was cool learning about her family and all of the interesting Savvy's they have. Like her Mothers Savvy is having the ability to make whatever she does perfect. (pg 5) Her brother Rocket has electricity as his,(pg 6) her other brother Fish can make storms (pgs1-2) and her Grandmother could bottle up sounds in jars from radio waves. (pgs 31-32) It was fascinating to hear about all those creative gifts and how they use it. I was really intrigued in following the characters in this book, especially Mibs. (119)
