(Thank you for making the list shorter than last time, it was really hard in the beginning to work with such a lot words)
44/46
(3/7/19)
Ancient - My sister Ophelia's wedding was spoiled only slightly by someone calling out coarsely, as the bride floated in modest beauty up the aisle of the ancient church, "Hubba hubba, ding-ding, twenty years in Sing Sing!" (p 23)
Avenue - After a while the tracks we had been following were intersected by a broad avenue which had been given the name "Cemetery Pales." (p 94)
Complex - The were each as complex as the case itself, which was one of the most bizarre I had ever encountered. (p 362)
Desert - "Nor were there any fleas in evidence, although I understand that fleas desert a dying rat as much as they do a sinking ship." (p 377)
East - Up the stairs I ran to my chemical laoratory in the east wing of the house. (p 50)
Goddess - If ever I should have a daughter, I decided, which I doubt greatly, given my solitary nature - I should name her Victrolia, for the Goddess of Music. (p 290)
Inscription - Scribbled underneath this inscription, in pencil, was the message: Ardella: Under strict embargo till publication date Oct. 8th /52. (p 200)
Kingdom - There, before my very eyes, were all the wonders of the animal kingdom, laid out in a glistening panorama, like some rich and detailed altarpiece from the Middle Ages: the lungs, the liver, and the ileum, whose function, Dogger told me, is to absorb certain nutrients, such as vitamin B, and, of course, the saucy little sausages of the small intestine which, at a sudden stroke, now fell open, revealing a dark, damp mass of barely digested matter. (p 349)
Massive - The AGA, at which Miss Truelove busied herself, was a remarkably large, old-fashioned model, cream-colored: not as big as the one at Buckshaw, but still massive enough to chuck into it a blubbering Hansel and Gretel with room to spare for the drippings. (p 253)
Mortuary - We set out on foot along the nearby layby or siding, passing the refreshment room and the mortuary, which were surprisingly close together, I thought. (p 92)
Noble - This amazing man was so noble he might have been born in armor and on horseback, ready-equipped with shield and lance. (p 225)
Pillar - As we set out across that immense expanse, Dogger paused to swipe a forefinger across a fluted pillar and examine it closely for dust. (p 110)
Plateau - From my pocket, I took the small cylindrical object which I had wrapped tenderly in one of Feely's silken Liberty scarves, one that I had purloined from her dresser: a flame-colored reminder of the fiery plains and the mountains and the cobalt skies of the Spanish plateau; the colors of earth, and air, and fire. (p 463)
Pyramid - "Time for your medicine, Dr. Brocken," Dogger said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a green glass pyramid of what appeared by its label to be patent medicine. (p 116)
River - Each rivulet of water racing down the glass suggests a river of thought: a branching Amazon, with countless tributaries of deduction and speculation. (p 85)
Stone - I knew it was Balsam Cottage because the name was marked on a discreet sign attached to one of the stone pillars that marked the driveway. (p 127)
Tour - Dieter was taking her on a tour of musical shrines in Germany, culminating with two weeks in Vienna, with visits to the State Opera and the birthplace of Mozart. (p 58)
West - It was a magnificent performance, punctuated by numerous small hestitations, wrinklings of the brow, and examinations of the soul: a performance which would have been showered with awards on the West End stage. (p 114)
(3/9/19)
Crocodile - She pointed to a Donald in a sailor outfit, Donald in a Superman outfit, Donald running away from a crocodile, Donald dressed in a purple wizard's hat, Donald jumping through a hoop in a circus ring. (p 240)
Fertile - The girls are feral and fertile and freaked out. (p 116)
Hieroglyphics - I have researched aboriginal culture, Mayan hieroglyphics and the corporate culture of a Japanese car manufacturer, and I have written essays on the internal logic of various other societies, but I haven't a clue about my own logic. (p 77)
Island - I noticed a ball of bone growing like a small island on the side of her right foot. (p 148)
Site - She was supposed to have loaded bags of ice and some buckets in the car and driven them to the site but she had been embroidering my sun-top instead. (p 153)
Swimming Pool - "Drinking beer in a swimming pool sounds very nice to me," Rose said sharply, as if to remind him that she was not a great fan of drinking water with lunch. (p 90)
Tomb - The glass doors of the dome opened soundlessly as I stepped into this marble tomb, not understanding why I was here or what I hoped to find. (p 362)
Valley - The valley was covered in white plastic, just as the student in the injury hut had described. (p 30)
(3/17/19)
Cruise - I was talking to Lula but I was looking straight ahead, watching a black Lincoln Town Car cruise down the street and swing into Rita's driveway. (p 73)
(3/20/19)
Afterlife - If there isn't an afterlife, if there isn't divine justice, that makes what happens here and now all the more critical. (p 122)
Camel - "Does your family own a camel?" (p 204)
(3/24/19)
Bucket List - "I'm even working on my bucket list." (p 102)
(3/31/19
Amphitheater - The opposite bank was very high, so that the pool formed a sort of natural amphitheatre for the hippos to sing in, and the sound reverberated around us with such startling clarity that I don't suppose there can be a better place in the whole of Africa for hearing a hippo grunt. (p 188)
Chandelier - Now the paint is peeling, the lobby is dark and draughty, the posters advertising the "World Famous Peace Hotel Jazz Band" are written in felt tip and sellotaped on to the panelling, but the ghost of the Cathay's former grandeur still lurks high up among the dusty chandeliers, wondering what's been going on for the last forty years. (p 297)
Excavation - "That's a very fresh excavation," he said. (p 272)
Falcon - When you train a falcon you train it by hunger, using it as a tool to manipulate the bird's psychology. (p 372)
Lodging - Unfortunately the Jing Ling had no free rooms, and we were ejected into the night to find lodging in an altogether grimmer crumbling hotel on the outskirts, where we sat and thought, once more, about the dolphins out in their filthy river and how we were to make our recording. (p 313)
Pavilion - I remembered once, in Japan, having been to see the Gold Pavilion Temple in Kyoto and being mildly surprised at quite how well it had weathered the passage of time since it was first built in the fourteenth century. (p 289)
(4/1/19)
Colossal - The colossal fiend hiding in the space above her head had been growing in strength for thousands of years. (loc 1670)
Man Made - Paranormal investigators tag our own noises and manmade sounds, marking the location on our recordings , so when we go back to review our tapes for evidence we don’t get our hopes up if we’re the cause of something going bump in the night.
(4/8/19)
Mummy - “I’ll go tell Mummy.” (p 83)
(4/10/19)
Dam - Now that the dam was broken, he was helpless against the flood. (loc 3483)
Sanctuary - He wanted to tell him that yeah, he lived alone, and they wouldn't be bothered because everyone else knew that was his sanctuary and they couldn't just barge in and make themselves comfortable. (loc 2499)
(4/28/19)
Bedrock - Physical and visual cues may be the bedrock on which our sexual arousal is built, but our bulky, powerful brains can go far beyond those basic stimuli, finding intense stimulation in something as objectively neutral as words on a page, or a spoken discussion. (p 280)
Cult - Similary, I've argued that our brains need privacy, but some people opt to live in alternative communities (cults, communes, etc.) where this is scarce at best, and some of the most densely populated cities in the world offer little chance for space and privacy. (p 113)
(5/5/19)
Sail - "And Mom and Dad called this morning, they’re setting sail at noon." (loc 151)

I was actually quite surprised I found "bucket list". I was going to read a free cozy mystery just to get the word "alligator", but I wasn't enjoying the book and last night, while I was suffering insomnia. I decided why am I picking up books that I would never have chosen to read if they were not to complete a challenge. I have so many books that I truly want to read why waste my time reading a book that I am not enjoying or that is merely mediocre, if even that. I think I have read more 1 and 2 star books this year and last than I have in several years. And that's not counting many books that I DNF'd.
I agree Kathryn! My intention is not for you to read bad books just to complete challenges. That is one reason I don't really care about end dates. Enjoy your reading, read what you want and if it happens to complete a task on a challenge...all the better! Life is too short!
