This was in the refrigerator for me. I will definitely read more books by this author. Jack and his decisions drove me crazy!
This wasn't exactly my cup of tea. The main character was terribly unlikable, most of the characters existed to be killed off, and I really hated the fact that some parts of the writing came off as misogynistic. I might try another of his books in the future, considering how popular he is as a horror writer in general, but this really didn't impress me.
After I finished this novel I needed a little time to let it ‘settle’ with me. I’ve got mixed feelings. A lot of the events were quite implausible, however, I’m happy to slurp up whatever’s being served when it comes to the horror genre for the sake of escapism. The portrayal of women in was so hideous that I began to believe that this must be some sort of ironic statement. Karen seemed like a caricature of a person. The most terrifying part of the book was Karen tottering precariously around that decaying old building in those heels. My nerves were shot to bits.I do feel like the novel deserves praise for good pacing and the description of location and action. I felt like I was right there in the middle of the story. I’m definitely going to read more from this author. I’m interested to see how his other novels compare.
I would put the first half of the book in the refrigerator; exploring the old building in the dark gave me the creeps and I loved how mysterious everything was. The second half got a bit more outrageous for me and would be room temp. I wasn't a fan of how women were portrayed in this book but I'm willing to give Masterton another try. I also hated the main character and felt very sorry for his wife.
this book was refrigerator for the first part. I think it peaked when the caretaker got killed unexpectedly. It also felt too long. Everytime Jack learned something it took forever. I really did not care for the portrayal of women in this story at all. Karen deserved better on every front and his wife had to put up with his crap too. Jack made the dumbest most frustrating decisions.
