Play Book Tag discussion

I loved Exit West, and also really enjoyed The Reluctant Fundamentalist, so I was very eager to read How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia. Alas, it was a disappointment. It is formatted in a way that to me detracted from the story. Each chapter begins as if from a self help book, and then moves on to a third person tale of a boy's attempt to find riches and love, spanning his life from his impoverished childhood, to his death as a very wealthy man. Bouncing back and forward from self help mode, along with the third person narrative, meant I never really connected with the characters and ultimately found the novel frustrating. It took me a lot longer than it should have considering its size.
