I chose the book "We are the Ants," by Shaun David Hutchinson. This is the first book I have read from this author and I chose this book because of the connection I made with the first summary I read about the book. I found this book to connect to me on many levels because I have dealt with many things Henry has also had to deal with at such a young age. Hearing about the death of his boyfriend Jesse due to suicide is what drove me to this book. I have also dealt with losing a significant other to suicide and connecting this to a teen and showing their struggle to cope with it can also connect to a lot of young readers. Those struggling with depression or loss of a loved one from suicide can see a connection in this book. I had a hard time throughout the book determining if the "Alien abductions" were in Henry's head or actually happening, however I enjoyed how open ended the author left this for us to decide. This book seemed to move fairly fast as it was only set over a course of 4 months which is such a small grieving period for someone, I think we can all related that it often takes much more time than that. I would have liked to see the author expand on this time frame or maybe make the book longer. I felt as if I was left off thinking Henry's life was back to normal and totally fine when I finished the book however only 4 months had gone by. I would like to see more from this book! I understand the pain and confusion of what Henry deals with and I think books like these are important for teens who are so susceptible to suicide.
