Please consider the post-apocalyptic deeply interesting The Zona by Nathan Yocum. It's a book with indelible images in it. I want to read it again, so I'm nominating it in this, the author's birthday month.

If you want to try something different, and by a member of your group, "Troubles" (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008CT962O and others, e.g, Smashwords etc). The apocalypse was a total collapse of the economy, of governance, where those not privileged lived on the minimum needed to keep them at bay, and received the partly toxic food nobody else would eat. But the economy is recovering, and there is a very brutal race to get control of the future wealth. There is also a smattering of science.
