What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

My wife remembers a book about a kid who seems to grow like a plant. Today we were watching the Odd life of Timothy Green, and she thought that the book she read was the basis of the movie. However the movie was based on an idea by Frank Zappa’s kid Ahmet Zappa. Anyone know what the book we are thinking about? She read the book about 35-40 years ago.

Nine-year-old Allen Brewster has a fantastic idea that might even win the silver trophy at the science fair: human photosynthesis. He has several obstacles to overcome, but Allen persists in his mission by using the scientific method and finally comes up with a concoction that turns him into a human plant. He turns green, craves sunlight and water instead of food, and sprouts baby roots if he stands in mud too long. But then Allen is deemed a threat to national security, and his project is suddenly top secret.

Could you be thinking of the Thumbelina fairytale? The woman who wants a child plants a seed in a pot and waters it. When the flower grows and opens up there is Thumbelina :)

There was a movie called “Konrad” starring Huckleberry Fox that came out when I was a kid, but I had no idea that it was based on a book! Thanks for teaching me this!
