Lauren (ablondelibrarian) | 15 comments Hi everyone :) I'm just looking for a little bit of advice.

I haven't really read anything from steampunk genre - and to be honest I'm not sure I know what it really means? I hear so many great things about it though...

So could someone be really nice and explain to a steampunk noob exactly what the genre is...and also recommend some books to get me started?

Thanks

I don't even know what it means either, so I stay away from it. It confuses me.

Angela Dossett (whisperingwillo) | 94 comments This is a definition: a genre of science fiction that features steam powered machinery instead of advanced technology; usually represented in a historical time period that features anachronistic and impossible machines.

I hope this helps out.....

I've read some of books from this genre....they are ok, but not one of my favorite genres...

Guy Vestal - Counter Culture Critic (DaddyRose) That is basically it. I have a Steampunk novel I am working on right now (Only one and a half chapters posted here tho, might have to update that again. hahaha). Such irony...

"The Invention of Hugo Cabret" would be the best place to start.

NOTHING Cassandra Claire.

Kate Wrath Check out Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff... it's a Japanese-inspired take on Steampunk. I've only read part of it but found it really interesting. It's on my to-read (the rest, lol).

Hmm... Interesting, but it's all probably not my cup of tea. After I read all my TBR books, I might try something from the genre. I just don't know which one.

Guy Vestal - Counter Culture Critic (DaddyRose) No. It is seen as far back as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Guy Vestal - Counter Culture Critic (DaddyRose) Light and Shadow I have not read, but is on my buddy read shelf, All of Gail's parasol protectorate is a buddy re-read for me now that Prudence is coming! And I keep balking on Finishing School, someone please slap me hard as possible, I have no reason to lag on that. I am still trying to get Leviathan off the ground as well.

Jessica The first time I read the Etiquette and Espionage book I didn't like and just skimmed it but then I decided to read it again and liked it. But the 2nd book is better, so I'm glad I did read them. I loved the Parsol Protectorate series! So Im really looking forward to when Prudence comes out.

Guy Vestal - Counter Culture Critic (DaddyRose) We need "like" buttons on these comments. Just mentioning Prudence should get a like. :-)
