Tami | 12 comments I’m surprised there are no comments yet.

I wonder when did Lord A discover what Alexis is and was it before or after they met? Who introduced them? Why was Alexia ok meeting a vampire?

Ah, I think you'll find this is revealed in the final Custard Protocol book.

Tease.

Lindsey | 4 comments I haven’t read the custard protocol books yet. I’ll be excited to read the story of how Alexia and Lord A met. But it does say it took him four times before he realized what she was in this book.

Melissa (veruna) | 49 comments I’m listening to the audiobook for the first time. Excepting certain known mispronounciations, it’s been absolutely charming. I like the sound of the narrator. But I question how others pronounce BUR? Do you spelling it out or shorten it to some form? I read it as a single word.

This little nugget of info is making me so excited.

I read it as a single word (pronounced burr) even while knowing that it's probably said the same way you would refer to the CIA or FBI.

It's funny there are things we authors never think about when converting for narration. Unfortunately we often aren't asked for our input either. I always read BUR in my head as a single word. Sort of growled out. Did she not narrate it that way?

Gail Carriger (gail_carriger) | 103 comments I should also add, if you want to hear how things are pronounced in my head then listen to Emma Newman do the narration on any of the novellas she does (Romancing the Inventor, How to Marry a Werewolf, and forthcoming Meat Cute).

I hired her personally and we liaise regularly pronouncing stuff. So she is the closest you'll get to "author voice."

I might get the audiobook for one of these to hear it. I'm not a huge fan of audiobooks though...I like to see the words.

She has a lovely voice, but she spells out BUR, which comes over clunky and awkward to me. I am very much enjoying the audiobook experience overall. I’ve read Soulless so many times that I’ve started skimming to my favorite bits, and the audio has me slowing down and embracing the entire work again, which is lovely.

Emma Newman does a phenomenal job! Her narration of How to Marry a Werewolf is one of my favorites.

This is very interesting to me. Most who listen to audio only do that, so they don't let me know the differences.

I'm so glad you like Emma! I adore her and her voice.

Stacy | 13 comments Finished Soulless this morning. Having read many of Ms. Carriger’s books over the past 5 years since first reading Soulless, I wondered upon starting this reread if this first book would still hold up after her writing and world had evolved over time. And I am happy to report that it 100% holds up! Why did I ever doubt it? And while I remembered many of the big plot points, and especially the carriage ride at the end (!!!) there were entire plot points that I had forgotten - like the mystery they had to solve! How could I have forgotten that?!?! So on the reread, I was still caught up in the suspense. And the audiobook was great, even if the narrator mispronounced a few names - Lord Akeldama is rolling his fashionable eyeballs at that! But nonetheless, the accents and the emphasis of certain lines were well timed, and with such amazing content to read, we can forgive Ms. Grey, the narrator, for her mispronunciation. Now on to reread Changeless. I’m telling you, participating in the Great Parasolverse Read Along of 2019 is the highlight of my year! So much fun!!!

Justyna (tenelilli) | 26 comments Ooops. I read it way before the start time, so of course I forgot to comment, because why would I.

This was my first book by lovely Miss Gail, and it was nice to revisit it good 8 years later.

I still love it as I did before and my main comment is: how did I forget how much of canoodling, and nibbling and smooching Alexia and Conall got up to pre-marriage in this book??? 😂

I am appealed by my short memory. 😂 😂 😂

You are not the only one! I keep having to remind readers because they're like but you early books we so much less sexy, and I'm like... no really, they weren't.

Stephanie Franklin (insertscenehere) | 4 comments I'm curious now - after reading the Finishing School books and starting this one, did anyone else have a slight heart attack wondering where Soap was? Considering all of the loner werewolves were supposedly "gone," he was the first one I thought of!

And yes, this book absolutely holds up. It was my intro to the world, and I'm ever so happy to be back in it.

I figure he’s still a well kept secret, or we’d have encounter an enraged Sophronia. She’s not above interfereing with her charge’s life for Soap.
