Let's discuss!

Deborah (debh56) | 63 comments I can’t imagine living in a lighthouse. The surroundings would be beautiful, but they were cut off from the world. Then, to have a miscarriage and to be so alone. This chapter made me sad.

Myra | 48 comments Yes, it was sad when she lost the baby. The magic of the lighthouse for her was gone.

“Such a mysterious business, motherhood. How brave a woman must be to embark on it, he thought. Yet Isabel seemed utterly single-minded about it. “It’s nature, Tom. What’s there to be afraid of?”

What foreshadowing - in the book and in life. I really like Tom and his insights. He’s a good balance for Isabel who seems unafraid/naive, I can’t decide which.

I loved his gesture of getting the piano fixed for her. And I laughed at Tom saying “she’s chucked a wobbly” when she got mad at him. I’m going to start saying that around our house.

deana everett | 124 comments I’m still worried about how different they are. Tom is very concerned with the rules. When she wanted to make love in the lighthouse and joked about him having to record it, he really thought he would have had to. He freaked out about the map too because it wasn’t theirs to alter. There’s more about Janus in chapter 8: Janus was the god of Doorways “..torn between two ways of seeing things.” This is certainly foreshadowing about something they will not see the same way. There’s more foreshadowing in the description about Isabel. “Able to cure and able to poison; able to bear the whole weight of the light, but capable of fracturing into a thousand uncatchable particles...”

This author seems to have a mastery of foreshadowing without being obvious. Even the meaning of Janus was very interesting.
