I wonder about the ability of Dov’s memories to fill him with so much guilt. His father was a mix of good and bad, but his father beat him. I am not sure I can readily accept that Dov ought to feel guilty at hoping his father was the dead parent.

Isn’t it common to prefer one parent over the other?

Do you think his mother committed suicide? Does it matter?
