Joec As a teacher of high school seniors, I am always pushing for self discovery. I find that knowing what we are made of is a major component of inner confidence. When they graduate, the world will expect a lot. Those confident enough to continue after they fail, will thrive. Failing is a part of life that I particularly love to explore. It is one of the essential "ugly truths" that need to be exposed.
We read excerpts from Strayed's memoir, and identified her courage to admit these ugly yet true moments. My hope in exposing my students to her memoir, was to see how the truths were not as ugly as we initially perceived. than anticipated. After some brief discussion, the ugly started to disappear. What began as an easy target to judge, turned into a bridge being built, connecting Strayed to her audience.
Strayed provides the exemplary example of how confidence can destroy the judgement of others around you, and inspire so many more.

Joe Montaperto I am a memoir writer with 3 books on Goodreads and part of the memoir group - I would like to know how I can post on there? I can't seem to get any answers?

Joec I think you just did. What else were you looking to do?

Kristina Everett I like to read books with these "ugly truths." This is one reason why I really like this book. I also love the hiking, nature, and physical struggles. Are there any other memoirs you found to have these "ugly truths" or failing a life?
