Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Greetings Space Opera Ladies!

I've invited some friends from Broad Universe and the Science Fiction Romance Brigade to come join us over in the Space Opera Fans community. What does that mean for us female genre fans? It means maybe we'll start seeing stories that have more topics that are of interest to women. Let me tell y'all a little bit about each group, and then I'll open up the thread for our newest members to introduce themselves.

Broad Universe is "an international organization with the primary goal of promoting science fiction, fantasy, and horror written by women." Most BU fiction is hard-hitting genre fiction that can compete with any male genre author, but it tends to have more fully developed characters and be sensitive to the issues of women and people of color.

Science Fiction Romance Brigade is "a community of over 400 Science Fiction Romance writers, authors, bloggers, professionals and fans joining together to give this dynamic genre a collective voice." Most SFRB fiction is romance-centric, but these heroines are sassy, sexy, self-assured, and usually save the hero before they go off to save the universe together.

I'd like to welcome our newest members and, so our existing Space Opera Fans members can see what kinds of books are out there that aren't the typical old white men's space opera, invite each BU or SFRB member to introduce themselves and tell us what books (or other media) influenced them to love the Space Opera genre.

Ladies ... introduce yourself ... tell us WHY you started writing Space Opera and where you hope to see this exciting genre go ... and then use the add book/author function to drop in your book covers.

Please ... no book blurbs or self-promotion other than your book cover! This is a reader-centric post. I just want our female members to see what other women are writing. I'll probably create a couple of Listopia's later to help readers find the sub-sub-genre they like.

Be epic!
Anna

Sheryl Nantus Hi there!

I'm Sheryl Nantus - I'm currently writing a science fiction romance series for Carina Press - Tales from the Edge - book one, IN THE BLACK is out now and the sequel IN THE VOID is scheduled for an October release!
In the Black In the Black (Tales from the Edge, #1) by Sheryl Nantus In the Void In the Void (Tales from the Edge, #2) by Sheryl Nantus

I grew up on sci-fi and naturally gravitated into writing fanfiction - won a few awards for my stuff and moved into the original items. I've got a page on ff.net if you're interested but am now more focused on my original fiction... though I still love my SG-1 Sam/Jack shippiness!

;)

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Welcome Sheryl! Yes ... Sam/Jack ... I think my favorite episode was 'Window of Opportunity' when Jack handed in his resignation and kissed Sam just before the time dilation loop reset :-)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 5 comments I'm coming over from BU AND SFR Brigade! In fact, I saw your post in the BU digest and thought, this would be a great group for SFRB! So glad you found us. So glad we found you.

Yes, I am an author. I have 7 SFR-ish novels and I also write romantic suspense. Project Enterprise is my 6 book first attempt at SFR/space opera and I'm in process of launching a new series called An Uneasy Future, set in a future New Orleans. So happy to be here. Space opera is for sure my favorite genre of SF.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Welcome Pauline! Glad you decided to help us introduce some exciting new female voices!

Okay ... I guess I'll introduce myself here:

Hi! I'm Anna. Your SOF MOD and Borg Queen. I'm a long-term sci-fi/space opera fan. I'm also a member of Broad Universe and a brand-spanking-new member of the Sci-Fi Romance Brigade.

I write all kinds of things ranging from non-fiction to fantasy to romance, but one of the series I write is a cross-genre epic fantasy/space opera/romance about the wars in heaven at the dawn of time (i.e., I write blasphemy). My angels are genetically engineered super-soldiers and the two old gods (Hashem and Shaytan) rule competing galactic empires. It's been called a space opera by some readers so I'll put the covers below for the three books in the series I've got out so far:

The Chosen One (Sword of the Gods Saga, #1) by Anna Erishkigal Prince of Tyre (Sword of the Gods Saga, #2) by Anna Erishkigal Sword of the Gods Agents of Ki (Sword of the Gods Saga, #3) by Anna Erishkigal

"At the dawn of time, two ancient adversaries battled for control of Earth. One man rose to stand at humanity's side. A soldier whose name we still remember today..."

I tell people it's not 'real' sci-fi because of the heavy historical / epic fantasy / romance element, but it's also space opera. Honestly, I just write whatever the heck sparks my fancy and if people happen to want to pay me to read it, sweet... :-) Genre? What's that?

Only under the 'GIRL COOTIES' section would a group of women get together and feel comfortable expressing that sentiment in the same sentence as mentioning science fiction... :-)

Pippa Jay Hi Anna, thanks for the invite!

I'm Pippa Jay, a member of and admin for the Science Fiction Romance Brigade. I write a range of scifi and paranormal, with or without romance, and I got suckered into watching, reading and writing space opera at the first televised showing of a certain film called Star Wars: A New Hope, when I was just eight years old. Top SF TV series to watch - Farscape and Doctor Who. Absolutely fell in love with Guardians of the Galaxy and really hope they do some more. Fave space opera authors are Jaine Fenn and Neal Asher, along with many of the SFR Brigade members. My latest SFR is Tethered Tethered (An Inc-Su story) by Pippa Jay

Welcome Pippa! You made it over :-) Since you moderate your own significantly sized community on Facebook, any tips you might have for integrating our wonderful 'legacy' space opera readers with the newer voices coming in would be welcome :-) It's my goal to make sure everybody feels there is something for them to read and everybody feels at least peripherally connected to everybody else. :-)

message 15: by Pippa (new)

Pippa Jay Oh, I can't take sole responsibility for the Brigade - I'm one of a dozen admins, though usually the one most often around. I guess the key to a good and lively community is providing somewhere for everyone to chat and feel comfortable, making sure there's a little space and conversation for everyone and anyone, no matter their preferences, and just keeping an eye out for any firestorms that might kick off. It looks like you already do that here. :)

Welcome Veronica! If you haven't already nominated yourself for one of the September BOTM's do that :-) Glad to have some more estrogen in the community :-)

Veronica Scott Was really flattered to see that someone had already nominated one of my novels! Maybe I'll suggest one of the others for October! Happy to be here in this community!

More than one community member can nominate a book, Veronica. It slightly increases the odds of winning the Random.org randomizer like having another ticket in a raffle basket, but it's all still chance.

S.E. Gilchrist (goodreadscomsegilchrist) | 1 comments Thanks for the invite Anna & hello everyone. I shipped over here from the SciFi Brigade & excited to be here. I write sexy science fiction / adventure romances, rural contemporary & apocalyptic romances. My current release is Star Pirate's Justice (book 2 in the Darkon Warriors series) & book 3, When Stars Collide is out on 22nd October. I feel both these two may slide into romance space opera but I could be wrong :). I love sci fi, grew up on a steady diet of the old faithfuls- Lost in Space, Star Trek, Dr Who. Star Pirate's Justice (Legends of the Seven Galaxies, #2) by S.E. Gilchrist When Stars Collide (Legends of the Seven Galaxies, #3) by S.E. Gilchrist

message 23: by Anna (new)

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Welcome S.E.! Star Pirates? Oooh! I love pirates!

Did you add your books to the appropriate Listopias? We've got romance-type ones, and then the general Space Opera Fans listopia.

[*note to self ... need to create a unified list of listopias and post it at the top of the community*]

We maintain a Space Opera Erotic Romance Listopia that has at least two M/M SFR books :-) Once in a while the authors stop by and say hello. :-)
