Maura is usually very cautious and I found this out of character for her. I do feel that it has to do with Daniel. I think Maura decided to try something new.
It was so strange that she’d go off like this with people who were virtually strangers and tell no one. It was sort of sad that she felt she had no one to tell:( Very out of character for her but then I got the sense that she was treating herself after her breakup/argument with Daniel.
I agree it was out of character but at this point even though her and Jane have become close they still aren't friends who visit over coffee and gossip. She really doesn't have anyone who fits the profile of a best friend. No family, no closely knit friends, she's lived a solitary lifestyle since coming to Boston. So even though she really isn't a risk taker she opted to do something a little crazy after her phone call with Daniel yet it was still planned. She didn't extend her trip and planned on only being at the ski lodge for the one day. I completely understand this. It's throwing caution to the wind yet still maintaining control of your life. Ultimately this signified, for me, her F-off to Daniel and I wasn't so surprised when she said good bye to him.
Great points, Christina. Though she was a loner and the trip was spontaneous, Maura is also pretty responsible. Not leaving an itinerary with her office (or someone!) was reckless.
