Suki St Charles (goodreadscomsuki_stcharles) | 61 comments I was torn between feeling sorry for Connie and feeling very frustrated by her behavior as all her secrets were finally revealed to Muriel. Connie seemed to be a lot more spoiled and impulsive than Muriel. It seemed that Connie was never held responsible for her behavior-- their mother seems to hold Muriel to account for her sister's actions, although she seems to be unclear on what she actually expected Muriel to do. I could understand Connie's desperation to break away from her family and her town; it seemed as if every decision (most of them were very bad decisions) she made backfired on her, and it was her decision to use Ben when she thought that Eric had betrayed her that was her undoing. She ended up married to a manboy she despised, in a family she hated. Even her death was indirectly a suicide, because it resulted from illness from running out into the storm to throw herself into the river. I was sorry she died, but I really don't think that she would ever have found happiness with Ben.
