Girl Code written by Andrea Gonzales and Sophie Houser was a very interesting book! The cover and title actually tricked me. I was expecting this book to be about “girl code”, which is typically thought of as rules that girls follow to protect/support one another. However, this book took me by surprise and it was about two very smart girls that are successful in the careers of coding. It does connect a little bit to the common term “girl code” because there is some sense of feminism and women empowerment! I enjoyed how positive this book was and how it depicted two girls taking on an up and coming career path; coding. I thought it was kind of comical that the two girls created a video game based on the menstrual cycle. My favorite part is the end of the book when Sophie acknowledges her self-growth and starts college on a positive note. I think it is amazing to overcome something difficult like public speaking or speaking out! Many people, especially young girls find it hard to publicly speak. Another unique part of the book was the “coding appendix.” Overall, I liked this book a lot and think it would be a fun one to incorporate into a middle school classroom library.
