Flavia is an accomplished chemist and poison expert, and is very independent for her age. In the 21st century, I imagine Flavia would be hacking into computers to solve mysteries, instead of riding around on her bicycle to investigate murders. Flavia doesn't neglect her scientific studies while working on the murder mystery. She also takes time out to experiment on her sister by injecting poisons and poison ivy into her lipstick. She's not a very nice kid, but it's fun to see a kid figure out clues that a detective didn't spot. It was change of pace, and I might pick one of the later books in the series.
