There are several story lines, a historical one about a man who can make rain fall - some of his story involves dressing in traditional Native American clothing and performing a "rain dance" in a traveling carnival some involves actually making it rain at the request of poor farmers. Book also has 2 contemporary story lines - the mother living on the family homestead with her blind sister. When book opens there has just been a bad storm and a stranger with amnesia and badly burned feet shows up on their property. Also the woman's daughter who is a young woman And has moved to the city, discovers she is pregnant after big fight with her boyfriend she leaves city to go to mothers house in country - there is no cell phone service at mothers. The walnut tree hasn't borne any nuts since major lightening strike many years ago. Seems like there was a shower of nuts at some point surrounding the mysterious strangers arrival
