My teacher read a book to the class in the late 70’s about a society of children. All of the adults had died ( I think in an epidemic). My memories of the plot basically involved them roaming around the city finding food and things to use to make new homes. I assume that it had been published in the 1970’s but possibly the 1960’s. I have no other specific memories.

Here's the Google Books preview of The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson - Andria's suggestion - https://books.google.com/books?id=M4O... There are different cover images.
I found an updated version in my library's digital collection and read it. That may have been the right book but I didn't have any deja vu' moments when I read it so I'm not 100% sure. If you think of any others that have the same type of plot, please be sure to share them! Thank you.
Empty World by John Christopher, dates from the 1970s. It's British, however, and the number of kids is small (only about four), so it's not much of a 'society'.
