What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Trying to find the name of a series I started reading a few years ago. I seem to remember it was about a lawyer or a judge in early London about the
time of the beginnings of the Bow Street Runners. He lived with his wife, who may have been sickly and had a street urchin that helped him. I also think he might have been based on a real person.
