The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler takes place in 1996, centering around the main characters, Josh and Emma. The two were in a weird state - not really friends anymore but missing one another’s company - when Josh shows up at Emma’s doorstep one afternoon. His family had gotten a free AOL CD in the mail so he had brought it over so that Emma could install it on her new computer. Although, after logging on, Josh and Emma are stunned to find facebook pages of themselves when the famous social media site hadn’t even been invented yet. As the two find out about their lives fifteen years into the future through pictures and updates, they continue to refresh the page, each time finding something completely different. As Josh and Emma realize what they’ve discovered, every decision - right or wrong - now lay heavy on their shoulders. I absolutely adored this book. After having it recommended to me by a friend, I knew it was a story that I had to get my hands on. After reading 13 Reasons Why, Asher’s most well-known novel, I became a fan of him as an author and was eager to read another one of his works. This plot, much like 13 Reasons Why, weighs heavy on the theme that actions have consequences, whether they be positive or negative. I really enjoyed the time jumps between the past and the future and being able to see Josh and Emma’s lives play out after each decision they made. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good novel that they can’t put down. The Future of Us pulls you in with the storyline and you won’t want to stop reading.
