I would say the theme is to be happy for what you have, I would say this because Pia is not allowed to have her own personality, which is saying Pia is not free. Pia's uncle Paolo is a scientist and she is immortal, and can not feel pain physically but mentally she can. I say this because, even Pia even said in the book, “I keep every muscle in my face perfectly still and draw each breath deliberately, slow and even.” By her saying this you can tell she knows she is not supposed to be able to feel anything in her. The text also said, “I know uncle Paolo’s eyes are on me, searching for any sign of weakness. It’s all I can do not to wince. I can’t fail this. I can’t.
