I tend to not read full on poetry books. However, I saw this one in the hands of a young angsty teen a few months prior and I thought it’d be a nice read. The first idea I learned is how to create a short poem throughout multiple pages. Rupi’s poetry is not on a single page, rather throughout. At first, I was confused as to why this was. Then I realized the smaller lines on each page were supposed to make the reader think more about what was being said. “i am a museum full of art but you had your eyes shut” is on a single page then goes into the next few lines on multiple other pages. It’s quick to read, but to get true meaning one has to reread it. The second idea I learned is how to write the truth and do it in a way that speaks to other. The poems in this book hit hard. It goes through four sections of hurt, love, breaking, and healing. “Do not look for healing at the feet of those who broke you” is one example of this. She may have experienced something herself as an author, and is now giving advice throughout her book. It speaks to readers who are in/have been in a tough place in life. The last idea I learned is how to show human connection and vulnerability with active wording. “at the end of the day all this//means nothing//this page//where you're sitting//your degree//your job//the money//nothing even matters//except love and human connection..” This example shows how active voice helps the reader acknowledge the piece. I found it intriguing for this type of poetry since I’m used to lengthy descriptions.
