Melissa I've had Clive Barkers Weaveworld suggested to me.I like fantasy inc dark fantasy, magic and horror so it seems to be something I'd like. What are others opinions? Is this part of a series of books or a stand alone novel?

Kimber It's a stand alone novel. I read it when it first came out and it blew my mind (that was many years ago). Based on the genres you like,I think you will find it a great read. I like to explain Clive's style as Stephen King on acid. When you are done reading, let me know what you think.

Melissa Thankyou.Wow, you have sold it to me and a 5 star rating too.I like something a little different.I will let you know for sure.Is Clive's other books a similar read do you know?

Papaphilly It is truly a great read. Both fun and dark as only Clive Barker can write. I gave it five stars and I couldn't put it down.

Richard takes about 30 pages to settle into the narrative but it definitely falls in to the "before he was shit" basket for clive barker, the ending is quite spectacular

It's good but it's dense, there are a lot of things going on at once and a lot of names and places to take in. But the world and characters more than make up for it. Not to mention the story is constantly evolving, it's the kind of thing you'd see stretched out into a trilogy today.

Kimber Clive's other books are each a different dark twist. Trippy is always a staple for him though. His early works from the late 80's to early 90's are essential Clive Barker reads. His later stuff you will just have read and decide if they are for you. I am a hardcore fan of his (ever since the first book I read which was Weaveworld)so I think he is absolutely brilliant. Have fun getting to know Mr. Barker. If anything it will be a fun ride. ;)

If you want to really get the essence of Clive Barker there's only one place to go: The Books of Blood Volume 1. Especially the stories "In the Hills, the Cities" and "The Midnight Meat Train." He mixes the horrible with the fantastical like no author I've ever read.

Melissa Thankyou for all your responses.Sounds like I need to give this a go.I understand it's one of those I need to stick with.Nice to know about his other books too.Think I am going to enjoy his works. Now going to have a look at The Books of Blood and see what they have to offer.

Doseofbella Weaveworld is an outstanding read. I enjoyed Imagica just as much. I really didn't care for Books of Blood. Gore is fine as long as the story line is good, but to me it seemed over the top.

Matthew Warren Wilson I also liked Weaveworld quite a bit, but I have to suggest The Great and Secret Show. It's my favorite Clive Barker book, one I continually go back to every few years to read again. He has a way of writing that is almost poetic, even when the subject matter is horrifying. Based on the genres you mentioned liking, you'll probably find almost all of his work enjoyable.

Aaron Carson I was personally very inspired by Imagica, and I think you might resonate with it Melissa. Weaveworld is very very good though.

David Merrill I read this many years ago and don't remember much about it except I tore through it and was captivated the whole time. I read half Imajica last year. I'm not sure what stopped me from finishing, except maybe I had something else I had to read for a group read and once I'd had the meeting wanted to move on. It was good, though. I'll probably get back to it eventually.

Melissa Ok,so I've popped the books mentioned including Weaveworld on my wishlist to read. They all look quite good.Think I'll start with Weaveworld though after I've read Deborah Harkness, Book of Life-last in the trilogy.

Wendy Lieginger I loved Weaveworld. Couldn't put it down. The worlds Barker creates are so rich and vivid.

My favorite Clive Barker book is Damnation Game. I've read it several times. Not the same genre as Weaveworld, though.

Dimitrios I got Weaveworld in my hands about 10 years ago but for some reason i didn't finish it at the time. At the moment i start reading about Fugue, it was captivating... i love Clive Barker's work. The way he describes characters or the enviroment in general, its amazing. It is as if i was there! 5/5 star for me! love it!

Ad.costas Loved it. Also loved Imajica and American Gods was good as well, but not as good as the other two IMO.

American Gods is by Neil Gaiman.

I'm new to Goodreads and came across this feed. If anyone else comes across this... I'm also recommending Damnation Game.
