Wow! This book is a beauty! The illustrations alone deserve a medal. I thought the story was interesting. I was not aware about the controversy with African Americans participating in bucking contests. So this was a historical topic of interest to me.
Unfortunately, the story was too short for me. I found the additional text after the story ended to be quite fascinating - about the main character's early childhood and other facts about that period of time. I wish it had been included in the story.
In the end, I don't think this book will win because it has to be considered without the illustrations. When I do that, it is not as enthralling as it could have been. I gave it a 3.
