Amy | 12983 comments This book actually was spectacularly beautiful. Not easy, but beautiful and sensual. This debut novel seems to touch the senses, the essences, the interior of thought. Its about a family, but so much more than that. Its about coming of age, but so much more than that. It is beyond a love story, or a clash of culture, or acculturation story. It is a life story, and one that weaves, love, conflict, belief, and the power of others to believe in us. I really loved it!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11172 comments That sounds wonderful. "...belief, and the power of others to believe in us." That's a theme that I would find very beautiful too. (It's why I loved Seabiscuit so much. Three (4?) men and a horse expected the best from one another and it became a self fulfilling prophesy.)

I'm putting this on my tbr. Thanks!

ADDED - Cool, it was already there, so up the list it goes! I have quite a few books on my list that would be good for an India tag, or immigrant-experience tag.

Amy | 12983 comments Really fabulous book group in this book last night!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11172 comments I'm struggling with the audio version of this book. It feels like the chapters were put in the wrong order. (It doesn't help that this is my bedtime book, so I might miss things, and then wake up in a later chapter.)

I think it might be better for me to read a print version. That way I can look for the ages of the characters or other clues to figure out where I am on the timeline.

Amy, was there anything in particular that led to a great discussion?

Amy | 12983 comments Whoops! I’ve been off for a while. I just responded to you in the once upon a river thread. But I would add something more to what I said there. We all agreed in the booklet, that while they were certain things that tremendously moved us, that we were hooked in but we didn’t really feel like it was an excellent moving book, until the end, we’re there with the last viewpoint. With the final narrator, each of us were blown away by Farmor then with the rest of the book. The very last thing I’d add that we talked a lot about, has to do with the thread that I just clicked into about the rules of civility. Something about how women and their opportunities are viewed in changing times when you come from a culture that things one way and you’re integrating into a culture where women are seen differently. And we were all moved by that. The difference between the oldest daughter, the middle daughter, and the youngest son.
