Sue | 2743 comments Read this as my TBR pick this month. It's been on my TBR for 40+ years, and I'm so glad I read it.

The book follows the life of T.S. Garp, son of an accidental leader of the feminist movement.

A true classic. The version I read was the 40th anniversary edition, where the author provides an updated introduction. He claims he was worried at the time (late 70s) that the themes of gender equality would be resolved by the time he published, and the book would have missed its moment. But....this book is as fresh as it must have been in 1978.

After finishing the book, I watched the movie. Robin Williams in the lead role is great, but the book is sooooo much better. (I'm sure I can say that to my fellow readers here!)

Karin | 9277 comments I remember reading this, so sure I'd love it, but while I liked it, it didn't make me a fan of Irving's writing. I can't remember exactly when I read it, but it was a long time ago--either not that many years after it was written OR c. 1990.

I loved this book, it was very humorous! I read it when it first came out!

SouthWestZippy | 1555 comments I want to read this book and keep putting it off. Part of me is scared it will not live up to the movie other part is will be far better than the movie and will not be able to see the movie in the same light. "sigh"
Thank to you review I am going to make a point of getting to it this year. Thank you.

Ooh, that's impressive!

I loved this book as a teenager, but have never seen the movie - I'm curious now...

Yes, many people loved it. I certainly liked parts of it, but humour is so subjective and that was a much younger me. I wonder if I'd find it funnier now, but am not going to reread it.
