Sarah Dorn | 3 comments The first thing I noticed about this book is the strange dialogue. It took forever to get a decent understanding of what the characters were saying due to all the slang used: “So I had another quiet malenky grin and then I took all the deng out of my carmens” (54). And although it was frustrating at first, I eventually got it down. I think this book wouldn’t be anywhere near as iconic if Anthony Burgess had styled it differently. This shows how taking risks in writing can make it stand out and be more unique.

Another thing I learned from this book is to be more at peace and confident in my writing. In the introduction of the book, Burgess explains how he has never been fond of this book. Yet, this has become not only his most famous book, but it is a cult classic. This shows how although I may never be completely satisfied and happy with my work, it doesn’t mean it is necessarily bad, and other people may end up enjoying it.

The last thing I learned from reading this book is the importance of having a complex main character. The main character, Alex, is a depraved and awful person, and he struggles with his humanity and sanity. Yet, the reader still feels empathy towards him because of the treatment he received from other and himself. Creating a multi-faceted character will help engage the reader and identify more with the book.
