Just read two wonderful non-fiction books-Heroines by Kate Zambreno and Bad Feminist: Essays by Roxane Gay, both of which I strongly recommend. Both deal with culture and (in Heroines) literature (and women authors).I am now focusing on book 3 of Karl Ove Knausgard's My Struggle which focuses on his childhood and as part of a book group read, The Small House at Allington by a (Victorian) favorite of mine, Anthony Trollope. So far, it is very relaxing and balancing. I always feel a little saner while reading Trollope.
And I'm waiting for Tana French's brand-new Dublin Squad murder mystery to be released today to download, The Secret Place. I love this series and have been waiting for nearly two years for the next one. Hope it lives up to my expectations, but I love the setting (Dublin) and, so far, the characters and dynamics amongst them, so I am hopeful.
What about everybody (anybody) else? Magdalenya, how is it going with The Smuggler's Bible? Ice, what are you doing?
Smugglers Bible was amazing...struggling tho a bit with my review. In fact I am a bit behind with my reviews and its hard to find more than a bit of computer time when i need some hours just for GRI still cant figure out your love for Trollope Ellie.
But go figure why I am applying myself to an obscure piece of dystopian fiction, Rainbow Bridge as well as the heideggar and a great workbook calledThe Desire MapNow that puts it all in perspective!
I look forward to your review when you manage it-they're time-consuming when done well (I kind of toss mine out). I'm hoping your take on Smuggler's Bible will help me.I find reading Trollope is like listening to Bach (not that he matches Bach's greatness, but they both leave me calmer; Trollope's prose is so balanced and clear).
Heidegger is too great for me. Just don't have the brain power. The Desire Map sounds very interesting.
Ellie, don't sweat it....apart from the central conceit, SB is not a tortuous read. But Trollope..ties me up in knots!
Fresh from the 'City' and de-stocking my workload prior to holiday, just taking 3 books with me so may well be raiding the local library. Currently Ancient Britain meets Frankenstein in the reading stakes.
well happy holidays dear IBhope your books are thick ones
but not too heavy.
have pretty well tied up my review of smugglers ,hope to get on a real keyboard....this mobile does not inspire wtiting
it seems I have got myself into another strange situation visa vis my reading path. I had been been waiting for the right moment to read Ken Wilber Boomeritis: A Novel That Will Set You Free! and that had to wait for the Pessoa and Smugglers and the Houllenbecq and Lethem....and then was it thurs or fri last I seized the time, even though I am not nearly finished Grace & Grit: Spirituality & Healing in the Life & Death of Treya Killam Wilberso okay, I am reading 2 books by the same author, and here is the strange part, I still love Grace and Grit, but oh I am having a time with Mr. Wilbur in Boomeritis! In fact I want to shake that man off his pretentious platform and this means a book I thought would be a big treat that I expected to gobble has taken me twice as long, because I keep gagging, and flagging
