Cool post but I have to say that Manga is one form I just don't care for. Maybe I'm too old? IDK, it reminds me of kids. (NOT saying anything negative about your daughter!!!!) That's just what it makes me think of.
I don't care for Manga either despite the fact that i like Ricard Sala, Burns, Spiegelman, and other alternative comics artists, but manga is a bit childish and few oldsters care much for it. Had I seen it at the age of 15 perhaps.....I enjoyed the novel A Wrinkle in time, but read it 50 years later and was bored. different ages, different strokes.
I used to be a big comic reader (and collector) mostly European of course. But it's been quiet a while now since I bought one. Both my son and daughter like to read manga, mostly online.
But don't be mistaken: it's not always childish. You would be surprised how many manga are for adults only.

perhaps the quality of the text is adult like, but there hasn't ever been any Manga illustrations that appeal to me.

She's reading a manga (Japanese comic) about a middle age female painter in Italy, called Arte.
Oh I said it's about Artemesia Gentileschi!
And my daughter said she already suspected that this was about a real person.
But after a closer look, the story is only (very) loosely based on real events.
As you can see in the pic: the painting the lady is making is in fact by Oratio Gentileschi (the father of Artemisia) And in the story the girl's father was no painter and dead before she learned to paint.
