Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Dune Chronicles - Frank Herbert

Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1) by Frank Herbert

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
*Heretics of Dune
*Chapterhouse: Dune

I just could not get into this despite multiple attempts. It's a shame too because it's such a classic sci-fi series!

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Interview with a Vampire - Anne Rice

I couldn't even finish the first book I hated it so much. And after reading Violin by her, I'm thinking this is just an author who is not for me

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Earth's Children - Jean M. Auel

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel

Another classic sci-fi I just could not get into

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments The House of Niccolo - Dorothy Dunnet

Niccolò Rising (The House of Niccolò, #1) by Dorothy Dunnett

Niccolò Rising

There's 6 more books in the series, and I didn't love the first book enough to make an effort to finish the series

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan

The Eye of the World

At 24 more books to go and the author dying so someone else having to finish the series (even if it is a renowned author who did so) I'm noping this one

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Outlander - Diana Gabaldon

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

Outlander

There's a lot with this series that doesn't work for me, and when the second book had a twenty year time jump and she has a daughter....it's just not up my alley. (Although I can see the appeal for other people!) This is one where I definitely plan on finishing the tv series though!

message 8: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Witcher - Andrzej Sapkowski

The Last Wish (The Witcher, #1) by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Last Wish
Sword of Destiny
Blood of Elves

The writing style isn't for me. Remains one of my favourite video games though!

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments The Giver - Lois Lowry

The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry

The Giver
Gathering Blue
Messenger
*Son

I LOVED the first book, but the second was only ok and the third pretty lackluster. At this point I'm not planning on reading the 4th

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Valdemar Mage Wars - Mercedes Lackey

The Black Gryphon (Valdemar Mage Wars #1) by Mercedes Lackey

The Black Gryphon

I just didn't feel like this book brought anything new to the table. No interested in reading the other two.

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments The Wicked Years - Gregory Maguire

Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Son of a Witch

Gregory Maguire's writing can tend to the....weird side. The second book got even progressively weirder than the first sooo...

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Animorphs - K.A. Applegate

The Invasion (Animorphs, #1) by K.A. Applegate

Oh man this series was such a huge part of my life for so long and I've read almost all of these at this point. That being said, I want to keep my happy memory of the series, and I think that ending will be too hard for me to read

message 14: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords

Between the hype, long wait between books, and numerous spoilers I'm just done with this series

I read the first three and at the time the series was "supposed" to be complete. I think the series kind of deteriorated past Children.

My son keeps trying to get me to get into this series as he has read them all and all the "etcs". I barely finished Book One. The hero is soooooooooo whinnnnnny. I am told he does not improve as the series goes on. So I agree. NO.

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Alexander wrote: "Too Spartan or akin to a movie too heavily focused on action and not enough character development? (The Last Witcher)"

Definitely the latter - I'm already someone who tends towards character development heavy books and this is definitely like....all plot no character development haha

Yeah I vaguely remember God Emperor being my least favourite by a long shot, so it would make sense that it was written a lot later

Yeah he definitely wasn't my favourite. To be fair I don't think I really like any of the characters all that much which certainly didn't help the series' cause

message 20: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (hitchhikerbooks) | 134 comments Shadow Children - Margaret Peterson Haddix

Among the Hidden (Shadow Children, #1) by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Among the Hidden
Among the Impostors
Among the Betrayed
Among the Barons
Among the Brave
Among the Enemy
*Among the Free

As much as I've enjoyed this series, it's been like 15 years so I would have to reread the whole thing just to get to the last book

I've read a bunch of these, and they were always pretty alright. But again, I've aged out of this a bit

Watch out - if you like Season 2 on TV, the book is so much better!

I've had the entire Valdemar series on my shelves for ages. They've made it with me through three different moves, yet have I actually bothered to read them yet? I remember I did read this one and one other at some point. I'm wondering if I should just give up on them.

message 25: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Boutet Try Arrows of the Queen - That is the book that started the whole Valdemar phenomenon. If you don't finish that, don't bother with the rest of it. If you do like it, finish that trilogy - Arrow's Flight, Arrow's Fall. If you survive that, read the Vanyel trilogy next a/k/a The Last Herald Mage. After that, you will be entrenched enough to read any of the other Valdemar books/series in any order you wish (although there are several websites glad to give you the chronological order). Trying to start with The Black Gryphon is incredibly confusing unless you know a bit about Valdemar to start with. Hope this helps!

message 26: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments Arrows of the Queen is the other one I read! I recall reading it in two days (this was years ago, far more years than I care to remember) and not being able to get to the bookstore again soon to pick up Arrow's Flight. By the time I did get it, I'd moved on to...The Blending? I think?

This did help, thanks!
