Blankets, by Craig Thompson is an autobiographical graphic novel about Craig’s early childhood life. He grew up in a Christian family with his mother, father, and younger brother. Craig was constantly bullied growing up but tried to succumb it by putting his faith in God and doing what he loved, drawing. As he continues through his senior year, he meets a girl at a church camp named Raina. She becomes his first love and they struggle through ways to be with each other. This book is about the struggles of Christianity, love, depression, bullies, and much more things on deeper levels. Craig especially expresses the danger of how Christians can distort people’s perspective of God if they preach the wrong things.

It was very compelling as a Christian to read from the perspective of a Christian turning away from God. I’ve grown up learning about God in a healthy way that encourages me to follow God rather than reject him. I thought some of the things Craig was told were monstrous and incorrect. For example, in the book, Craig was told that he couldn’t worship God by drawing. People can worship whoever they want whatever way they want. No wonder he didn’t want to follow God- I can’t blame him. The way Craig showed how he changed from being a depressed sad sort of fellow to being his own person and doing what he wanted to do in life was really inspiring to me. He decided what was best for him and chose that path. I thought this book was very thought-provoking and deep. It is a book I would recommend to many others and encourage people to read.

Bella | 12 comments I love reading autobiographies, it gives you a special insight into a new life. I think it would be interesting to see how seemingly heavy topics are taken on through a graphic novel.

Anthony | 11 comments This book sounds very good to read for anyone that has questions about that kind of topic. How did it read? Was it fast? Slow? And did you have to really read it thoroughly to pick up all of the details?

Yes! It was very good to have the opportunity to see through a person's eyes. It is very compelling! And with this heavy topic, it was good to see from other people's point of view too!

It was definitely a quick read, especially if you like mild romance. I read it fairly thoroughly but not so thorough as reading a book for an English class. It was honestly really compelling and made you want to read closer. You definitely get most of the details reading it just as you'd read a normal book though. The pictures add a lot to the story especially.
