About this Challenge
◈ Starts on 14 June and runs for 8 weeks (ending 9 August)
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each week the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word, gaining points per letter tiered by the book length (see below)
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only one partial word may be submitted at the end of the period
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com) as at least 40,000 words or 4 hours (as verified by Audible or Overdrive)
◈Only books read during the specified week can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous weeks to use later in the challenge

Point System
◈ Books between 160 and 200 pages = 5 points
◈ Books between 201 and 300 pages = 10 points
◈ Books between 301 and 400 pages = 20 points
◈ Books between 401 and 500 pages = 40 points
◈ Books between 501 and 650 pages = 60 points
◈ Books between 651 and 800 pages = 80 points
◈ Books over 801 pages = 100 points

Additional Points
The teams will get additional bonus points as below:
◈ Points will be available for participation in BOM discussions (specifically June's YA BOM, both July BOMs and August's Adult BOM).
- Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
- Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
NOTE: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write DQs
◈ Points will be available for reading books with genre tagging linked to the spell-out word - see the Top Shelves section for more information

Top Shelves
Each word on the wheel has been paired with a genre. If you read and use a book with the matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points per team.

Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK), and must be found on page 1 of the "Top Shelves" for the book. There is no minimum number of tags needed, provided it is present on page 1. If it's at the bottom of page, you might want to get approval from the Captains Group.

Word Genre
Beige Adventure
Brown Space Opera
Chocolate Classics
Cinnamon LGBT
Coffee Suspense
Sand Horror
Terracotta Memoir
Umber Shifters
Walnut New Adult

Chipmunk Respins

If you don't like your word, you can ask the Chipmunks of Creativity & Chaos to respin the wheel for you. Be careful though, who knows what will happen when the Chipmunks get involved!

You can ask for two respins during the game, but only once in any given week.
Requests must take place within 24 hours of your weekly word being revealed: once the week starts you can't respin.
If you respin you'll get a new word and genre.

To request a respin, the team Captain must post a request in the Captains Group

Note that there might be a delay between asking the Chipmunks for a Re-Spin and when it happens - they like to wander off (and Mods have busy lives)

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

Laura | 9707 comments Hey everyone, I'm Laura your captain and happy to have Megan along as our co captain.
I 'm from Canada and work at a non profit organization.

I love reading, kayaking, camping, hiking, bowling and badminton.

I will get the rules up over the next few days and link the important stuff. Our spreadsheet is linked in message 2 above. Please post a link to your wheel shelf and feel free to start planning which books you want to read for week 1; though no starting until the 14. Our word to spell out is " Terracotta" . If the book you read is tagged memoir then we get additional points.

My shelf

Feel free to friend request teammates and your captain and co captain. It makes updating just a little easier if we can easily check your shelf.

Challenge start

Geri Here is the link to my shelf https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I’ll start looking to see what books fit our word. Unfortunately, I never read memoir. :(

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I'm currently reading one which won't count for the challenge. I need to finish it before it expires!

Brooke, Alissa and I do. ( not sure about everyone else)

message 16: by Kaley (last edited Jun 11, 2019 08:06AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 2017 comments Hi all! My name is Kaley and I live in the state of Indiana in the US. I also work at a nonprofit.

I have two dogs (a chihuahua mix and a Boston terrier) and will soon be adding a cat to the family as well. I’m also recently engaged!

I read a lot of contemporary romance, new adult, and young adult. Depending on my mood I also will read mysteries/thrillers, but they aren’t my go-to. Excited for this wheelathon to branch out in some of my reading choices!

That being said.... I don’t love reading memoirs. 🤣 if we aren’t going to max out the genre points though I will definitely pick one up! I have read a few that I enjoyed, so I’m not against it at all. I just tend to read them slower and I get burnt out faster.

Laura | 9707 comments Hi Kaley, welcome! I have a collie mix, she is asleep in my profile picture! I'm going to work on a planning spreadsheet tonight but in the meantime I'm going to take an A and T, one of those is tagged memoir and the other is a BOM. (Once I get into the A book I'll see if it fits other letters)We will spell out our word several times with the amount of books combined read!

I am Leslie and I live in Colorado. I am retired and I am very happy because I will be a first time Grandma end of August!!!

My wheel shelf

Will start looking for books.

message 19: by Geri (new)

Geri Hi Kaley! Congrats on the engagement! I have 2 spoiled cats. They make a wonderful addition to a home!

I have a bunch of library books to read and they all work for week 1! It helps when character names and narrators count.

message 26: by Kaley (last edited Jun 11, 2019 10:15AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 2017 comments I’ll be reading the BOM too....as long as rereads are allowed. Are they? I couldn’t find it in the rules anywhere (but I may have missed it since I’m on my phone). It has been more than 6 months since I read that book.

message 27: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments The 6 Month rule is in place. I'll see if I can find it.

Megan | 1607 comments Hello!!

I'm Megan, newly married(a year is still new right ;-)) computer tech in the UK. I have a westie cross lhasa apso dog shes in my profile pic, we're looking at getting a corgi sometime before the year ends!

I'm good to read most things but I can't say memoirs are my cup of tea tbh! But I'll give it a go if I find one on the kindle unlimited. I'm a big romance reader and fantasy books when I get the urge.

Congrats on the engagement Kaley! Good luck with your wedding planning I hope you enjoy it.

And congrats on the first grandbaby Leslie! Thats so exciting!!

I'm in Cyprus until tomorrow so I'll reply to anything at different times over tomorrow. Not looking forward to flying home why can't we just teleport!

message 29: by Ina ✨ (new)

Ina ✨ (inaisreading) | 340 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Ines, but I mostly go by Sunny on here. I'm from Slovenia (that's in Europe) and I like to read, bullet journal and just have a general obsession with stationery and all things pretty. :D

I mostly read fantasy, both YA and adult, sci-fi, and I like to venture in other genres too - but not too frequently.

I'm finishing my school year this Friday so I'm excited to get to this challenge with all the time to spare :D

My shelf is also here! :)

message 30: by Geri (new)

Geri Hi Sunny! Great to have you on our team!

Good trip back home, Megan!

Everyone has inspired me to read a memoir. Brooke read one by Rob Lowe, so I will copy her and read his second book Love Life. Should be interesting and I was able to borrow from the library.

message 31: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Hi ya Megan! Hi Sunny welcome!

Ohhh, nice job Geri. Good pick up. Since you like Rob Lowe you may enjoy more than you think.

I'm currently reading Becoming by Michelle Obama and I really like it!

message 32: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Here's the link to the planning spreadsheet. I'll also add it to the top posts.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

You will have to ask for access. I 'll be online for a bit.
If you can add your own books perfect ; if you don't want to .. shout out and Megan and I will add them. I've added a few that we have already talked about.

Alissa | 771 comments Hi All!!!

I’m Alissa and I live in Texas in the USA and love to read I will give most genres a try but my first love will always be romance. I love getting new recommendations to try. Sunny I have also recently gotten into BUJO and planning snd have started a collection of pens, washi and sticker books to make them pretty. I just got a new job that I start July 1st that I’m super excited about and I think that’s it for now.

Good to see all the ladies from previous challenges and nice to meet the ladies I haven’t played with before.

I’m a little biased and think Laura is the best captain ever and I try to follow her to most challenges as I know it will be no stress and the best kind of chatty. 🤓🤓

Congrats Kaley on the engagement and Leslie on the first grandbaby!!!

I have no idea what I said I was going to name the shelf so I will figure it out tonight and update my post.

I will also put some books I plan to read on the spread once I get my access to the spreadsheet

message 35: by Geri (new)

Geri Laura, on the spreadsheet, what do you mean by top shelf?

message 36: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Hi Alissa welcome...and thanks for the kind words .Alissa , Geri &Sunny added books you should be able to add yours.
@ Geri- I copied the original spreadsheet...so top shelf means it is tagged memoir on that first page of shelves
I've got a couple and am trying to figure out which one I'm going to read.

message 37: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Alissa..I couldn't remember what I called my wheel shelf either. So I created one and linked it.

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments What books is everyone trying to finish up before the challeng starts? I'm trying to finish an Eve Duncan novel by Iris Johansen. I need it for two other challenges.

Geri Laura wrote: "What books is everyone trying to finish up before the challeng starts? I'm trying to finish an Eve Duncan novel by Iris Johansen. I need it for two other challenges."

I’ll be finishing a book for Clue today. Tomorrow I decided to watch some TV since I have quite a few books scheduled for the start of Wheel. There won’t be time for any TV! But that’s okay. A lot of books came in for me at the library. Wheel gives me a reason to marathon through them. Who needs sleep anyway?!

Ina ✨ (inaisreading) | 340 comments Laura wrote: "What books is everyone trying to finish up before the challeng starts? I'm trying to finish an Eve Duncan novel by Iris Johansen. I need it for two other challenges."

I’m not currently reading anything since I’ve had 4 exams this week 😅 I am quite excited to start reading something new though (finally)!

message 41: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Lol.. sometimes sleep is overrated. Was it like Christmas when your books came in? :-)
I'm finally #1 in queue to get The Mother-in-Law I can't wait to read it! Hopefully another batch of my holds come in tomorrow.

4 Exams... good luck, good luck!

@ Sunny, I withdrew my offer to write DQ's for the YA BOM as yours was first and we ended up being on the same team (I'll be back up ) I will still read the book but I may finish it the 2nd week especially if I end up reading two memoirs.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 2017 comments Laura wrote: "What books is everyone trying to finish up before the challeng starts? I'm trying to finish an Eve Duncan novel by Iris Johansen. I need it for two other challenges."

I just finished the book I was working on last night....trying to decide whether to start another one now or wait. I could probably get another done before the challenge starts, but I don't know if I want to take the risk.

Now onto book planning! I'm definitely going to be reading the BOM (I'll add to the planning spreadsheet). I'm planning to start Outlander finally as well....but I'm going to leave that off the spreadsheet for now because I don't think I'll be managing to finish that in week one.

As for additional books, I'll probably just add them as I go, if that's OK. Unless I'm reading something for a specific task I usually just go with what I'm in the mood for at the moment I am ready to start something new.

message 44: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments 1 day , 18 hours until start time!

message 45: by Ina ✨ (new)

Ina ✨ (inaisreading) | 340 comments I’m also more of a mood reader so I’ll also add as I go along 😁

message 46: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments That works Kaley and Sunny as that's me as well!

I tend to pick my favorite author of whichever library loans I have in at the time ( along with whatever works for the task I might be reading for)

It’s a bit crazy right now with the library! I just got an email that The Friends We Keep is now available for me too. And yes, it will work for week 1! I think I will have to pace my requests for the next few weeks.

I hope you enjoy The Mother In Law! I did. I am also thinking about reading another memoir. I will have to see if I can fit it in. They are pretty short, the ones I am considering. So it will only take a few hours to get through.

message 48: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I want to read that one, Geri. I like Jane Green! I think I'm going to go with your idea and pick the shortest of the memoirs that I have. Maybe I can get 2 in.
I think wheel is going to put a serious damper on my Risk game nights!
Is anyone watching the Nhl game tonight? Boston could win tonight and take home the Cup!

message 49: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 771 comments Ok I finally got around to creating my shelf. Hopefully I did this right:

Alissa’s Shelf

Tomorrow I will pick some books to read hopefully I can find a memoir or two 🤓

I try to go by what books become available for me at the library and usually only change that if it doesn’t at all work for the challenge.

message 50: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Thanks Alissa,
I got it!

19 hours to start time!
