Judy | 9 comments Just picked this one up from the library. The 4 page prologue had me hooked already.

I remember that prologue so well!

Olivia (rightengle) Difficult to get in the US - not in either of my local libraries! Might have to skip and read when I move back to the UK :)

Theresa | 1 comments Yeah, I can’t find it in any library close to me. I’m in Texas. And I really wanted to read this one. Boo!

Theresa, can you order the book through an interlibrary loan? I am in Texas too and it is available to borrow using the link below if your library is a member. It might take a week or so but at least you could read it. https://texasgroup.worldcat.org

Julie | 2 comments I love Helen Dunmore’swriting and such a pity we will have no new books given her passing recently..

Kay I read this book a few years ago and did not like it very much. Found it too slow and unremarkable and utterly predictable with the one thing I really dislike in literature. I would love to hear people's thoughts on it, especially if you enjoyed it.

Sara (sarariches) | 9 comments I loved this book but then I love most of Dunmore’s writing. The atmosphere is so dark and cold, and even if the plot announces itself, the way that the tension builds and the nastiness reveals itself are hallmarks of Dunmore novels. More later.

Cathie (caffeechino) | 13 comments My first Helen Dunmore and although I enjoyed the writing style and the general atmosphere of the book I don't think it's something that will stick with me. I will maybe try another of hers which would anyone recommend ?

Danya | 2 comments Just finished this. Although some disturbing themes, the writing was beautifully poetic. Every page is a treasure and her descriptions of nature superb, appealing to all your senses. Definitely creates a lasting impression.

Sara (sarariches) | 9 comments I loved this novel. I love slow descriptive writing and the pace didn’t bother me at all. The story was well plotted and there was a lot of foreshadowing which added to the tension. The characters, including the narrator, were not really likeable apart from Mr Bullivant. I took this to a reading group that I belong to and it was very well received. We agreed that there were similarities to Emily Bronte, and Rebecca. Perhaps this was to debunk some of the romantic views of people in beautiful country houses? So loved this.

Valje | 8 comments I needed to think about my review for this novel. I can't imagine anyone saying that they love it! It's not a novel to love. It is a good read. Although the characters are incredibly well drawn, they are not particularly likeable or trustworthy. If you are the kind of reader who likes to have mysteries solved and ends neatly tied up, you will be disappointed. But I really like Helen Dunmore's writing. Her descriptions of the land, countryside, nature, weather and the seasons are exceptional.
