What book are you reading right now or have just finished? What are your thoughts on it?

I am reading A Hollow Dream - Eternal Autumn and absolutely love it. There are quite a lot of typos but I am trying not to let that affect me because the story is so good!

message 3: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am currently reading The Raven Boys, and listening to The Scorpio Races, both by Maggie Stiefvater. Her writing is beautiful, even when the story falls down a bit, her style keeps me reading.

Ever since I found that authors actually give you free books to read in exchange for reviews I have not picked up one of my own. I just finished Swarm – A Zombie Thriller, will be posting a review soon. Next is The Last Overseer.

So far I have found none that made me feel the way the two Hollow Dream books did, I really recommend those (A Hollow Dream of Summer's End and A Hollow Dream - Eternal Autumn).

Chris Moen | 2 comments I'm reading 77 Shadow Street! Dean Koontz is kind of touch and go for me, but I have high hopes for a good horror story. Nothing from him has quite hit the high point of Odd Thomas for me, certainly not the later books in that series. His other books just don't do the same job of getting you invested in his characters. Odd Thomas drawing to a close was heartbreaking.

I have actually never read anything by him. I have bought The Bad Place though and it's sitting on my shelf. I will get to it, eventually.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 110 comments I'm reading Tess of the d'Urbervilles. it's ny first book by Hardy. Kinda hard to get through, but it's actually quite good. Reminds me of the Scarlet Letter, which is good, because I liked it.

message 8: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Gavin, The Scarlet Letter is my all time favorite book and I love Tess! Both a bit depressing, but really, really good stories. I hope you enjoy it.

Finished it earlier today. 'Twas' great.

i'm finding The Last Overseer a bit painful, the writing is not good at all... I'm only on page 39, it doesn't usually take me this long to read a book.

I haven't read it, but I hate putting a book aside unfinished, so I know what you mean. Sometimes you just have to slog through. ;)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Exactly, I refuse to put it down but when the writing is not good it's especially hard for us non natives. If the book doesn't grasp me, my mind wanders off very easily.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 110 comments Reading Jane Eyre

message 14: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm about 2/3 through with Gone Girl and am really enjoying it. BY far the best writing Flynn has done.

message 15: by Dan (new)

Dan | 14 comments I'm into book 4 of the Harry Potter series. I finished a re-read of Robert Jordan's "Eye of the World" last night, while concurrently editing and publishing "The Island".

I like to stay busy ;)

message 16: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm reading Unwind and am enjoying it.

message 17: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 110 comments Jane Eyre was harder to put down than I thought, so I finished faster than I thought I would. Anyway, now I'm reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

message 18: by Noemi (new)

Noemi Casas (noemi_casas) | 3 comments I've just finished the trilogy of The Magicians by Lev Grossman, a mixture of Narnia stories and Harry Potter for adults. But now I don't know what to read next... Maybe no magicians or fantasy worlds for a while? ;)

Kandice This isn't about what I am actually reading right now, but...I accidentally chose the wrong title and marked it as "reading". Does anyone know how to delete it from my books, or short of that, my "currently reading" feed?

message 21: by Ana (last edited Sep 28, 2014 10:41PM) (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Kandice, go to the book page and click the little green icon on the right of the bigger button that used to read 'want to read' and now should read 'currently reading'. It should show you the shelves. Just click want to read again. Or you can click the X (if you hover it over the check mark it will appear) on the left instead and delete it from all shelves. Or untick the shelf, that should work too.

Hope that wasn't too confusing, I just woke up xD

Thank you! I don't "want to read" it either, but having it on that list doesn't bother me as much as having it on my actively reading list!

message 23: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Well, you can still eliminate it altogether, if you hover the mouse to the left of that button an X should appear :) You are very welcome!

message 24: by Dan (new)

Dan | 14 comments Now concurrently reading Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and JK Rowling's 4th Harry Potter novel.

message 25: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm currently audio-ing The Colorado Kid and reading Doctor Who: Dead of Winter. I buy Doctor Who books whenever I find them and then slowly dole them out to myself.

I have been reading Storberry for a while now and overall enjoying it. I wish real life wasn't so distracting, this book really deserves you devoting your full attention to it. I don't think it's a fast read, not fast paced I mean, it's one of those books that you're meant to get into, the life, the people, etc. I'm about 48% now I think and the terror is finally catching up eheh

message 27: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm rereading Horns before I see the movie, reading Pay It Forward and listening to The Colorado Kid because I am currently addicted to all things Haven.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 110 comments I'm reading Anna Karenina

Not really. I just try to keep one audio, one e-book and one large print going at all times. :)

Abigail (abbeystarlite) | 27 comments Insomnia narrated by Eli Wallach. Great so far, and when I started reading it a few days ago I had trouble sleeping ;)

Ooh that's one of my favourite SK books, hope you enjoy it :)

I am reading a graphic novel now called I and You (for some reason won't show up when I try to use the add book/author link). It's slow progress cause it's a pdf I can only read at the computer. Being a bit of chore tbh. I never read at the computer :(

message 34: by abigail (new)

abigail (a6igail) | 8 comments I'm currently reading "The Cockoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith. I have actually never read anything similar to this book, but I really love it. It's a crime novel and it is so well written and the characters are so well established, it's a delight to read.

I loved it too! I bet you'll like The Silkworm even more.

I just finished The Knife of Never Letting Go but don't want to comment, rate or review until Nolan finishes. (We're reading together!)

I just started Etiquette & Espionage. Carriger's books are so fun. I love to read them after something...not so fun. O_o Palate cleanser.

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Wow Kandice you're done already?? That was incredibly fast!
I should have been done with this graphic novel by now but it has left me plenty confused.

message 37: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Nolan wrote: "Wow is right, Ana. I think she broke a record :) I forgive her... (sighs) I forgive her lol."

Pshaw!

I'm not a good sleeper so I am often reading as my family slumbers. Other times I get hooked on a show on Netflix and watch 3 or 4 episodes in a row and then feel guilty about wasting time with the boob tube.

I never, ever fell guilty about reading. :D

I can't wait for you to finish so we can rip it all apart!

message 38: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Kraft | 4 comments Reading The Secret of Crickley Hall, by James Herbert. Its very long and frankly at 1/4 through, It just isn't moving me. It has all the earmarks of a good gothic horror novel; but little has happened that wasn't quite predictable. Characters are fairly well defined, there is a slight mood of 'wrongness' but it hasn't grabbed my throat yet. Will keep you posted.

The one by Chris Dietzel sounds intriguing. He was the first author which gave me a book to review. It was a short story actually. I don't think he liked it much :(

Both are on my to-read list, just have no clue when I'll get to them.

message 40: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
The problem wasn't the length per se, it's what he did with the length. I tried to convey that in my review. It turned out just bland to me.

message 41: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
I read and wrote a review for the book he has on Amazon for free, I can never remember the title. I thought that you had read my review because you mentioned the short length, I mentioned it in my review.

Yes, that's the one I was referring to :)
I didn't realize Hauntings was a short story as well.
Btw, the edit button is your friend ;)

Kathy Kraft | 4 comments Can anyone suggest a really good mystery associated with Christmas?
Not one of the overly sweet stories, but a solid agatha christie type?
If you haven't read this one for Halloween; its classic storytelling by Christie.
Hallowe'en Party

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Beside Hear Me Scream, I have also started reading What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions, and I am having tremendous fun discovering the crazy questions and reading the answers Randall comes with. It puts a whole new light on science.

In case you don't know it, Randall Munroe is the creator or the webcoming XKCD, which is excellent.

Kandice I seem to be unable to settle down and really read so even if I don't finish my current book tonight I will need to begin Frankenstein so I can finish it for book club Wednesday night. I've read it lots of times before, but want it to be fresh.

message 48: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments GR posted this yesterday.

Has any of you read those books? I have to admit I haven't read any. I haven't even heard of most of those (that's what happen when you live on the other side of the world).

Are they good? Would you recommend them?

message 49: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
I have not. I would like to read the bone clocks but not going to purchase another book with all the ones I have standing by...

message 50: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I read Landline and here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Obviously, I loved it.

I own two others on that list, The Invention of Wings and Big Little Liars, but haven't read them.
