In my opinion they offer the most free material, it's easy to "borrow" title from my local library, I can loan my friends books, my favorite magazine and papers are delivered right to my Nook, they're relatively inexpensive, you can watch Netflix, etc., my children have school textbooks on theirs, and really, I can't think of any negatives.
I still buy a LOT of actual books, but I am also addicted to my Nook.
That sounds really interesting! Living in Portugal I probably would not have access to many features though. We don't have many libraries here these days, certainly not local.
I have not purchased an e-book reader yet. I am leaning towards Kindle Paperwhite because I would be able to read outdoors. Are there any differences between Kindle and Nook? I have been using the Kindle app on my phone and have to say it has a lot of interesting features.

So then it connects to the Barnes & Noble site like Kindle connects to Amazon? Sorry, I am truly a noob at this!
I have so many free books from Amazon that I will most likely get the Kindle instead. Even if I end up spending money the book will always be mine (unlike using library services) and it's still cheaper than paperback. I couldn't find any free books on B&N.

Have you heard of BookBub? Check it out:

You should absolutely sign up even if all you use is a reading app with no actual e-reader.
I have not heard of it, no. I finally managed to install the Kobo app, I haven't found the Nook one, oddly.
I guess I better take it easy eh, there are already so many free books I still need to read on Kindle...
I liked Kobo but i prefer the Kindle/Amazone interface. Will try Nook as soon as possible, thank you for the recommendations!

I'm using an old, very old (at least for the digital world) Sony reader. I probably was one of the first on the market. Yet, it is still working and I am quite satisfied with it.
I never tried the Sony app or whatever software they supplied with it. At that time, I was using Linux and couldn't install it. So I started using Calibre, and that's the software I'm still using today to manage my ebooks.
I almost never buy ebooks. I mostly read copyright free old classics on my ebook or R4R from new authors that they send directly to me, so I never tried any of the usual ebooks online book-sellers.
There are a lot of ressources for free classics on the web, the gutenberg project being one of the most comprehensive. GR also has a lot of them linked on the books' pages.

It dates from before the Kindle and other booksellers devices (I did say it was antiquated). But Sony does have newer models. I think they also have their own bookseller, or a partnership with one at least, but I'm not really sure.
As I said, I only read free books on it.
So I don't suppose there's a company out there allowing us to read all formats in e-ink or whatever it's called and backlight and all that lovely tech that's easier on the eye and lets you read outdoors? :)

I can only speak for Nook, but I have yet to find a title I cannot access on mine. I'm not familiar with Amazon.
You know, this has been such an issue for me for a while now. I am now considering just buying a tablet and installing all the applications. I just don't know what to do >.< It seems a waste only to buy the Kindle, even if it's my favourite... In the long run, I mean. I don't know. Bah.

I use a tablet that was a gift so I didn't buy a Kindle yet and with so many options on the market I didn't decide either but maybe in the near future I will get one just for the ebook reading experience!

I have only ever tried Paperwhite and have a feeling I will stick to it for a long time.
Sorobai, you really should! Once you go E-book you'll never go back!

It even happened that sometimes, I read a book in the ebook version, and than bought the paper version to be able to lend it to friends (I think that's what lacks the most with ebooks)!

Hear, hear!
I still read paperbacks but cannot say it is balanced.
It is so weird, though.
Embarrassing confession of the month: I have found myself tapping a word on a paperback to find its meaning >.<

I thought I was the only person in the world to do that! You've completely brightened my day. ;D
I have only tried the Kindle app on my phone so far.
