La Tonya Jordan | 843 comments Greetings Everyone! I hope you are well. As we roll into mid-summer I thought we'd have some fun with a monthly theme of travel. Back to books. Can be a place you want to travel to, someone else's travels, etc. There are so many terrific books out there.

Here's a few ideas to whet your appetite:

Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

I can think of so many fun options for this. Looking forward to all of your nominations. I'll accept 1 nomination per person, not previously read by our group, and at 6 we got to the polls!

Thank you!

Leslie

P.S. I'm still adding other reads to our short story thread for this month so wander over from time to time. :-)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 220 comments I nominate That Bear Ate My Pants! That Bear Ate My Pants! by Tony James Slater by Tony James Slater

There comes a time in every man's life when he says to himself, "Holy Sh*t! I'm about to be eaten by a bear!"

Tony James Slater went to Ecuador, determined to become a man.
It never occurred to him that 'or die trying' might be an option...

The trouble with volunteering in a South American animal refuge is that everything wants a piece of you. And the trouble with being Tony, is that most of them got one.

Just how do you 'look after' something that's trying it's damnedest to kill you and eat you?
And how do you find love when you a) don't speak the language, and b) are constantly covered in excrement and entrails?

If only he'd had some relevant experience. Other than owning a pet rabbit when he was nine. And if only he'd bought some travel insurance...

That Bear Ate My Pants is the hilarious tale of one man's quest to better himself. Whether losing a machete fight with a tree, picking dead tarantulas out of a tank of live ones or sewing the head back on to a partially decapitated crocodile, Tony's misadventures are ridiculous, unbelievable and always entertaining.

Long before Sky One got involved, there were already plenty of Idiots Abroad. This is the story of one of them...

Leslie These look terrific! Honestly, I think over half of my To-Read shelf fits this category. :-)

Leslie Okay everyone! I took the liberty of amending our poll thread to become our discussion thread to get us off the ground and running. Welcome back! This month we have a fun animal read. I'm excited because I discovered it was made into a movie which I've ordered off Netflix. :-)

Susy (susysstories) Thank you Leslie!
Yes, the fact that it’s made into a movie was my reason to read and nominate it. Looking forward to the discussion!

Leslie Yes, my housemate and I ordered it from Netflix already. :-)

I couldn't get the book, so in addition to the movie, I'm going to read about Ponce de Leon's discovery of Puerto Rico and Florida as part of my Camino reads. :-)

If you're interested, Juan Ponce de Leon And the Spanish Discovery of Puerto Rico and Florida by Robert H. Fuson Juan Ponce de Leon: And the Spanish Discovery of Puerto Rico and Florida by Robert H. Fuson

Susy (susysstories) Thank you Leslie but I already have the book + waaaay too many reads planned for July as it is....

Leslie That wasn't meant as a Buddy Reads or anything like that. Just FYI I'm reading this because I can't get our book. If it interests you to know that book, here's it's title and author.

Leslie No worries.

Susy (susysstories) Starting this one today! Is anybody else reading it?

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie My movie came. We're watching it tonight. I can't find the book.

message 19: by Leslie (new)

Leslie My friends loved the movie! I thought it was cute, but it might have been the heat making me grumpy....but I get a little irritated with animal movies that go away from what is natural (not speaking of the homing instinct). Don't want to say too much to spoil anything for anyone. It was cute.

Is anyone reading the book? Any thoughts you'd like to share?

message 20: by Susy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susy (susysstories) I finished it last weekend.
Having read A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey recently, at first I was afraid this book would just be more of the same thing. But it wasn’t. It turned out to be a heartfelt story about Bella and the adventure she got on to get back to her owner. No reincarnations but of course she got to meet quite a few people (and animals) she helped and provided comfort to. Right up until the end I was worried about her surviving her adventure, with her being in such a dangerous situation with only a few pages to go....would that mean a bad ending? I also worried about Bella succeeding in getting back to Denver. (view spoiler). An easy, fun and heartwarming read that I would recommend to any dog (/animal) lover!

Looking forward to the movie!

Leslie Yes, watch the movie! Thanks for your review. I had the same feelings. Some parts were predictable and some weren't. I kept wanting her to make it on her own and/or with animal support and had to laugh at myself. The humans annoyed me so much the way it was portrayed. Some animal books/films are like that. There were some moments/points in there that hit on some of my own past experiences/emotions so parts were emotionally tough today. I thought I might be alone in that (I'm going through identity theft, can't live in my own house right now and have had to move place to place for over a year), but the other women in the room with me were all crying or out and out bawling.
