July 2019-Group Read Nominations
I’m going classic women with:We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson
Or
Frankenstein - Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Yes obvious choices, but yet classics that are still great today!
- [ ] The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling- [ ] More Deadly than the Male: Masterpieces from the Queens of Horror by Graeme Doyle ( short story collection of various female writers)
- [ ] The Hunger by Alma Katsu
- [ ] The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
- [ ] The Drowning Girl by Caitlín R. Kiernan
- [ ] White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi
Sorry for so many suggestions I have so many female horror novels on my wtr list atm and I also don’t know if a short story collection would count but it’s here too

+1
After reading her Some Possible Solutions a few years ago, I'm very excited to see what she does with "horror."
The Silent Companions is AMAZING so I will second it. I will also second Wakenhyrst.I will also nominate The Red Tree by Caitlín R. Kiernan.
Sarah Crowe left Atlanta--and the remnants of a tumultuous relationship--to live in an old house in rural Rhode Island. Within its walls she discovers an unfinished manuscript written by the house's former tenant--an anthropologist obsessed with the ancient oak growing on a desolate corner of the property.
Tied to local legends of supernatural magic, as well as documented accidents and murders, the gnarled tree takes root in Sarah's imagination, prompting her to write her own account of its unsavory history.
And as the oak continues to possess her dreams and nearly almost all her waking thoughts, Sarah risks her health and her sanity to unearth a revelation planted centuries ago...
Oh, wow, this is going to be a good one! I have one suggestion, Experimental Film by Gemma Files
--This won the Shirley Jackson award in 2015. I love horror stories about film. And lots of seconds!
Wylding Hall
Wakenhyrst
The Silent Companions
Houdini Heart
Several of these look great! I’ll second :“Behind the door”,
“we have always lived in the castle” and
“The Between”.
Have we not read a bunch of Shirley Jackson this year? Or am I in a lot of groups that all seem to want to read Shirley Jackson?
Silent Companions was interesting. Did we already read that this year or was that another group?Shirley Jackson is fun. I think we recently read We Have Always Lived in the Castle so maybe the Haunting of Hill House?

If I remember correctly, Silent Companions was winning the audio poll but then the group realized there wasn't an audiobook available. And it got 3rd place in the the regular poll for May. I'd love to see it finally win! (I've been rooting for it for a while!)
I haven't read any Shirley Jackson yet, but would appreciate the motivation.I second The Auctioneer by Joan Samson.
I nominate The Purchase by Amy Cross and Craven Manor by Darcy Coates, both waiting on my Kindle.
Obsidian wrote: "Classic horror I think. Carrion Comfort."Pretty sure Dan Simmons who wrote Carrion Comfort is missing some of the important anatomy to be characterized as a woman. Then again, if he/she identifies as a female, I'm cool with that too. :)

I would like to nominate Thana Niveau. I think her collection "Octoberland" is particularly outstanding and some of the best-crafted horror I've read in recent years: https://www.amazon.com/Octoberland-Th...

Poppy wrote this book when she was still a woman.

That theme is, (drumroll please!): Women in Horror Fiction!
Any nominations this month must be by women! Any group reads over the past year are not eligible to be nominated again. You can find that list here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
This nomination thread will be open through Thursday, June 20th and the poll will go up on Friday. Let's see what women get your horror motors running!
