David Merrill | 2 comments I'm in the midst of rereading FEAR for an off line discussion group and decided I'd see if there was any activity in groups about it. I found nothing, so I decided to join this group just to put it on the Goodreads map a little more.

L. Ron Hubbard was a great pulp writer. Unfortunately, Dianetics has buried that in history to a great degree. Few manage to get by that part of his reputation and read his fiction these days.

One thing I like about this book is you immediately know you are in good hands. The writing style is very good. Hubbard brings us into a normal world that slowly gets turned upside down. What's really cool is a lot of the horror is stuff of normal life, shadows, things seen out of the corner of the eye, a brush against the leg. But it all turns sinister and maddening.

I'm only half way through it now, but it lives up to my memory of it from about 25 years ago when I first read it. This is a fantastic horror novel. It hits at a very simple base level, which is what the best horror does, in my opinion.
