I avoid romances, and skipped this one. Especially romances for the sake of romances. If the greater story contains a dash of romance, I will stay, but if the whole purpose of putting pen to paper is to describe a romance, I'm outta there.Hoping July is more something else, less romance. Seems we've had a lot of romances.
God! Do I eve agree with you! I do give it a chance but often DNF then. Hope July isn’t romance or non fiction! Will see
You should really give it a chance. While the book jacket gears it as her falling for him etc etc. I think her family drama and new friends and personal growth take a larger role than the romance.
I liked how the signs of her slowly falling in love showed. Her doing different things and opening to other people
I do tend to gravitate toward books with some element of romance, but, I must say "The Cactus" did not come across to me as a romance. Yes, her character developed and opened up to relationships mid-book, but that did not seem to be the focal point (at least to me) of the story. I think I was rather indifferent about her relationship with Rob - I probably sided with Richard due to the circumstances.
I was a bit surprised I enjoyed this book so much and it stayed with me because of her character and portrayal of a self sufficient woman who did not need others to complete her.

Perhaps I should crack it open. . . ?

Independent, self-reliant are traits that come to mind.
You might enjoy the book, just know her character learned a lot about herself and that's what helped her adapt to her future. Even in the end, I would not call her a romantic. To me, it was a story about family dynamics, secrets, and discovery. ;-)

What did you think of Rob and Susan's relationship?
Do you often look for some sort of romance in the books you read?
