Welcome to all the newcomers to the Seasonal Reading Challenge - we're delighted that you've joined us!

To make things a little smoother, please read the following threads: The Seasonal Reading Challenge Explained and Getting Started. These will give you a good overview of the SRC, and explain where to find additional information.

It's also important that you review the Rules Folder. This contains the Rules of the Challenge and the Posting Requirements. These will give you important information about the rules and about what must be included in your completed task posts. And be sure to check out the FAQs for more explanation and answers to common questions.

Also, look at other topics in the Frequently Asked Questions folder. We have included posts to explain various things, like Big Book and Golden Oldies requirements, main page genres, etc.

If you can't find the answer to your question in any of these place, and your question is a general one, please post it in the General Questions thread in the help folder for the current challenge. For specific questions about individual tasks, please ask in the individual help thread for that particular task.

Finally, before you post a completed task, please re-read the task requirements. If a task states that something is "required" - you must include it in your post!

So, welcome - we hope you enjoy the challenge and find plenty of new and interesting reading ideas!

And, a big thank you to our seasoned members, who are always so helpful in answering questions. We appreciate it!

Post 1 has been updated with links for the Winter 2014-2015 challenge.

message 6: by Linda (new)

Linda Do you have to have all your books for the whole seasonal challenge selected and approved before starting? If so, I think I may have missed the deadline for that?

Morgan (faeriesfolly) | 923 comments Linda wrote: "Do you have to have all your books for the whole seasonal challenge selected and approved before starting? If so, I think I may have missed the deadline for that?"

As long as they fit the tasks, you can read whatever you like and decide whenever you like. If anything is questionable as to whether it fits, you can ask on the individual task threads if the options you're thinking of are okay.

You can also get it noted that certain genres are present.

People can join in on a challenge at any point, so you're good to go as long as you have requested a readerboard name.

You ABSOLUTELY DO NOT have to have ANY books approved in advance. In fact, we would really prefer people to not routinely ask for approval, for no good reason. If a book clearly works, it works - there's just no point taking up everyone's time with asking for approval.

Please read the FAQs.

Bianca Rose (biancarose) | 245 comments Hi,

I'm new to the challenge and have a (probably very silly) question. I have completed a number of tasks and claimed points for them (Points are reflected on the readerboard).

My question is- how would I know if there are issues with my post and mods needed me to provide further information? I noticed that there is a thread titled "Winter Challenge 2015: Questions/Problems in Completed Tasks". Are participants meant to be keeping an eye on this message thread to see if their name pops up? Or are you tagged somehow when mods have issues?

Sorry for the newbie question! Thanks all.

If there's a problem with your post, there will be a message in that thread for you. Some people just read that thread - not a bad idea when you're new, since the problems/misunderstandings, etc that other have may be illuminating for you.

Basically, though, you should be keeping track of your own points, as well as how many big book and golden oldies tickets you have claimed. We update the readerboard every 50 posts. If the number on the readerboard does not match your own records, that tells you that something if wrong and you should check the ?/problems thread for a message to you about one of your posts. If nothing is there, double check your own records and if you can't find an answer, you can post in the ?/problems thread and we'll investigate.

Shelly (readbetweenthewines) | 2 comments Hi Just joined so thought I'd intro myself

Only joined GR this year - possibly a mistake for a book addict lol! Over the last few years my book reading has consisted of work related books or fantasy so I've made a concerted effort to broaden my horizons both in genre and getting myself across that list of books that "you just have to read before you die"

So now I'm pretty much reading anything although I am developing a bias toward physiological thrillers. Don't have a lot of friends who enjoy reading so feel free to add me as a friends.

Love recommendations from others and happy to give them as well.

Looking forward to the reading challenges

thanks
Shelly

message 17: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) A little awe-inspiring to think that you guys actually came up with all these rules and tasks! I'm overwhelmed after reading the rules, but I will get there gradually. I'm looking at Summer as toe-dipping and maybe by the next season I will know what I am doing. :)

well, the rules didn't all come at once. We've been doing this for a long time and the rules have evolved.

message 19: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments Hi to Shelley, Crescendo and Sara the challenge is doable but this season is huge. Just read and see if your books fit a task - try to do the things that might get you a reward at the end

such as
- best rookie
- golden oldies - read a couple of pre 1950 books and get yourself into the draw
- big books - one or two big book tickets
- do all the 5 and 10 point tasks for nickels and dimes
- review one of your books - for best review

Or you could pick the tasks you like best - I really like the derivative task this year and am looking forward to reading the books o have chosen for those

And i like the tasks where i can get away with one book rather than 2 so 15.3 and 15.4 and 30.5

people are so creative there is something for everyone

Book promotions should be limited to the Book promotions thread.

Ghost in the Stacks Hi I am new...guess what? I probably have a stupid question that has been asked a million times. I have checked the FAQ thread ( or I missed it there). But since the Winter Challenge started on Dec 1st, and today is Dec 39th, can I back date to the 1sf, or can I only use books starting today?

Thanks!

Maria Adkins | 2 comments Hi, I'm new to Good Reads, so I know this is probably a pretty stupid question, but . . . what's an MPC? I've seen it mentioned in a lot of the tasks as sort of a genre classification, but I've been unable to find anything like it on a book's page. Can anyone explain this to me?

MPG = Main Page Genre. It refers to the short genre list on the right side of the book page.

Welcome Rucha-a lot of helpful hands here. Just be sure to read the rules carefully and you should be fine. I will say after 4 (or is it 5?) seasons, I still need to re-read a few each season.

Tanya D (mtlbookworm) | 144 comments Hi All,

I used to participate years and years ago. I've been reading quite a bit more in the last 2 months (one good thing about quarantine- more time for reading) so figured it would be fun to give this another shot.

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Hi all!! Like the above two posters, it’s been years since I did this challenge. Lots of life has happened since and with that, decreasing time to read. I’ve been rebooting my reading this year and have so far read more books this year than in the past few years so doing this challenge just felt the natural next step. I’ve been making my reading list for the past few days and now just cannot wait to start the summer challenge.
