Yay! I was given a copy of this book by the author’s wife in exchange for an honest review, and I absolutely loved this book! I’m excited to reread it for the discussion.
I really enjoyed this book. I could feel this families frustrations all the way through. Living in michigan and being a Special Education teacher I have not run into this issue. I have also seen where parents that have children that do not have special needs but are struggling have been brought up over and over again. I believe Magda should have qualified for services and received more help than just speech. Where I work we have a first rate special education team and we discuss students all the time that may need more help. Unfortunately public schools are broken and need to be revamped to meet the needs of all students, I think there are some educators that are trying to change the process as we speak. I am sorry you had such a terrible experience and I hope I have never caused a family so much pain.
Hi Enid,I'm so glad you enjoyed the book! I think there are many educators doing phenomenal work and agree the system is broken and so the work to change it is incredibly difficult. We're hoping that one of the outcomes of sharing our story is to open up the dialogue between teachers and parents and I believe we are on the same side of the fight and ultimately want what is best for kids. I can't imagine you have ever caused a family pain and so appreciate the sincerity of your reaction to our story.
Best,
Lisa
