I like this question. I believe there are so many works of art that evoke tranquility and peace I can't really narrow them down to one or even a hundred! My first thought was of Claude Monet, pretty much all of his paintings. I'm sure we are all familiar with most or all of his work. I will only post a few if only for some color on this page.
Impression: Sunrise
1872

Water Lilly Pond
1889

Water Lilies
1919
I am not particularly interested in imagery that promotes tranquility. I am much more interested in art work that is provocative and mind questioning. I want to decipher a piece of art's meaning. But, yes, I am somewhat interested in placid work but not to a large extent. For that reason I am not particularly interested in impressionism, but yes it is pretty and I enjoy looking at it for a short period of time but wouldn't hang any of it on my wall.
i would simply get tired of it.
I totally agree with you there, Geoffrey. I like to gaze at them for a little while, passing on the museum wall or while waiting at the doctor’s office but to have at home wouldn’t evoke much reflection or creative thought. Wouldn’t be much of a conversation piece, either.
I was just thinking, water evokes stillness and quiet for me. Who is that current famous artist that just sold the multi-million dollar painting and he paints the works of swimming pools and water, impressive blue with reflections of sunlight, etc.? I am drawing a blank on his name...(Now I feel stupid) He is/was the highest paid artist in the last year, I think unless someone recently out-sold him...hmmmm
No, there is another one. I hadn’t heard of him before he sold this one painting recently, like within the last year for more than Jeff Koons Balloon Dog.
Oh .... now I don’t know, Dirk. I need to get to my regular computer and Google it. Maybe it is David Hockney but it seems like I already knew Hockney before... ugh now I’m confusing myself! I’ll let you know later.

Yes, I'm here at my PC. It is David Hockney. I have heard the name so much since I first read about this painting it's like he's old news now. I do like his work. I think his water is tranquilizing. Wow, why couldn't I put that together earlier? I guess I didn't get much sleep last night.
