Joanna (jomatthan) | 4 comments Looking for some books to recommend to dental students off the list and wondered whether you can help me compile a list that has a dentist as a character within a book or is written by a dentist (or equivalent). Many thanks in advance.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments I've never considered the list from this viewpoint...I can't think of any of them at the moment that even mentions dentistry, though I'm sure that some have.

Whenever I think of dentists in entertainment, I always think of Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man. That, or the 'Anti-Dentite' episode in Seinfeld. Probably not the direction you're looking to go, though.

Christopher (Donut) | 28 comments I think there are some dental office shenanigans in The High Window, but please don't ask for details. I don't remember the details.

There is mention of a dentist office sign in Little Women. But that's hardly something to be of intrigue to a dental student.

Joanna (jomatthan) | 4 comments Thanks so much! It’s a start! Yes, sadly, I too can think of loads of medic authors and books with physician main characters but none written by dentists or which have a realistic dental protagonist. I’m putting the reading list together to encourage our students to engage with the arts and humanities via role-modelling, and thought ’the list’ would have some good literature to recommend. If you can think of other titles off the list, I’d appreciate those too! Thanks again.

Of course the first think I think of when I think of teeth is Dracula. hahaha but I know that's no help either...

Capt Gravy (captgravy) | 1 comments “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour” by Joshua Ferris
“The Story of my Teeth” by Valeria Luiselli

These are not on the list and I’ve not read them. But I’ve heard that they are good.

Ferris’ protagonist is a dentist. And the other book is about teeth. Hope that helps.

Jennifer W | 251 comments Life of Pi has an interesting plot twist involving teeth, but it's late in the book and not dentist related. I don't want to say more than that for fear of spoilers.

Joanna (jomatthan) | 4 comments Thanks! Forgot Life of Pi even though I have read it. Will check out the other suggestions off the list too. So lovely you guys are pitching in to help!

Are you looking only for books that are on Boxall's list? At first I assumed that's what you wanted, but re-reading your first post, I don't see that you mention Boxall's list specifically

Oops...nevermind--now I see that you do.

Interesting choice of words... :P

I was trying to find a way to combine the two threads, but apparently that is impossible. There were no posts except mine so I deleted it and moved mine.
