I almost don’t know what to say. The birthing ritual is very disturbing. The memories and flashbacks rip my heart out. The commander’s behavior is bewildering. I’m taken in by this book and don’t want to put it down. At the same time, it’s nothing new - just more privilege and power for the rich, famine and oppression for the poor. I hate what’s happening - I hope there’s something good coming up in the 2nd half.

I agree that the whole birth day thing was quite disturbing. The flashbacks are interesting, in that it shows that it’s not really that long since the societal changes took place. The story about Moira shows that not everyone is willing to go with the flow. It makes me wonder how many others have tried something similar. I’d love to know what happened to her after she escaped. What’s the deal with the Commander? I’m intrigued to know where this all ends up.

I also found the birth day to be disturbing and am also curious if Moira made it away safely after escaping! I’m curious to see where things go with the Commander because I was definitely not expecting that!
