Susie Continuing my Iliad retelling bender, I read Ransom by lauded Australian author David Malouf. This book received much critical acclaim upon its release, and I can see why. It tells the story from alternative perspectives, mostly focusing on the grief felt by Hector's father, Priam, king of Troy. His grief, and the grief of Achilles, ultimately must coincide, and Malouf lays out the story using stunning prose. I bought the hard cover of this novel many years ago, back when Borders still existed, and I started it but it didn't grab me. I wasn't overly familiar with The Iliad at the time, and I think I was too young. I'm really glad to have gone back and tried again. Thanks go to Idit for the reminder.

Idit | 1028 comments I’m happy we both did.
I just randomly saw it in the library few months ago, but ended up returning it without reading, so it was in my mind for this month.

Did you read anything else by him?
He mentions how he first encounter the Iliad while he was young in WWII and reading about unending war while being in one echoed with him.
I think he said he was in Brisbane so the threat of Japanese was there.

He mentions a poem of his that I might check one day : “Episode from an early war”

Susie I’ve not read anything else by him, but thought I might give Remembering Babylon a whirl when the time is right. How about you? Thanks for the insights about Ransom.

Susie Tracy, I think you’ll appreciate it.

Idit | 1028 comments I never read anything by him.
I just saw a link to 45 minutes talk with him about Ransom. I’m going to sleep, so won’t check it tonight, but it’s probably interesting
