Interesting that they decided to use her character. I know this is new canon and not beholden to what has come before but it's still interesting to point these things out (at least I think it is.)

The last we heard from her was in the novel Shatterpoint and I believe an issue of the Republic comics. She had gone rogue, Mace Windu tracked her down, and she basically lost her mind and was being kept at the Jedi Temple.

Her being Caleb's master is a far departure from her fate in the old EU. I wonder if JJM decided to use her or if she had already been established as Caleb's master before JJM was picked to write the book.

John Miller (johnjacksonmiller) | 27 comments It's the latter; I came in later in the process.

Thanks for pointing this out. I do find this interesting as well.

To be honest I had not learned this name before but it is encouraging that they are using elements of the EU in the new era of star wars. This makes me feel good and I hope it does the same for those that were really scared they would ignore it completely.

Laura I was so excited to see Depa referenced! So many of the background Jedi from the prequel trilogy made it to the Clone Wars (Shaak Ti, Luminara Unduli, Adi Gallia, etc, etc, etc) and I was always disappointed we never saw Depa. It's great that they're giving her some (canon) backstory now.

6d7073 | 8 comments I had no issue with using her again. I posted elsewhere that as I thought back I could not even remember exactly how shatterpoint ended. It had been a long time since that book and I never went back to re-read it. This took nothing away from shatterpoint. JJM you said that the character choice had already been made before you had the project - unless I misread it. Who made that decision?

The lucasfilm story group obviously made that choice or maybe even dave filoni

John Miller (johnjacksonmiller) | 27 comments The series creators had already laid most of the groundwork.

Heather Martinez (JediKitten) | 14 comments I, too, was excited about Depa's appearance. Shatterpoint is one of my favorite novels, but I was always sad about her fate. I think this is a good start to the new canon.
