One of the biggest things I took from this book is that no matter how much the news or public opinion tells us about a place, it is full of people just like us. When I went on a trip to Europe once, the goofy proprietor of a hostel in Bern, Switzerland said that they don't hate Americans, they just hate our government. While he may have been trying to make a joke, I think it does kind of apply here. We get in our head what conflict and terrorism of the Middle East means and some people react negatively when they see people who appear to have a background from that region. But, it is not the people - it is political, religious, and terroristic views held by the few and not the many (and definitely not the all). Just something to keep in mind!
