I recently began a new job working a before and after school programs for students at an elementary school. Part of our required curriculum is reading with/to the children. Each month we will be voting on a chapter book to read together. In one specific month we will focus on much younger children's books (both to cater to the younger children in the program and as a nostalgia factor for the older kids) and will likely read one each day instead of one larger book that month. I was curious what books were favorites either for you or amongst your children through the kindergarden to fifth grade years. I'm compiling a list of options to vote on and would love to get some more variety. Anything from short picture books to more challenging yet age appropriate chapter books will work. Thank you!

When I was in 5th grade at a certain point during the school year my English teacher would devote the ending portion of our class to reading us Where the Red Fern Grows. In my 3rd grade class my teacher would always have us re-write a poem from Where the Sidewalk Ends: The Poems and Drawings of Shel Silverstein she put on the board and encourage us to make our own picture for the poem. Not exactly what you were asking for but was something I really enjoyed as a kid.
Of course there's always the classics: Goodnight Moon, Charlotte's Web, The Giving Tree, The Little Prince
Frindle was always a favorite of mine. So was Sideways Stories From Wayside School. Really the entire Wayside School series was pretty good.
I'm not entirely sure I'm the best person to answer this as in 5th grade I read and understood The Odyssey and have been at a 2nd year University reading level since then but other more "age appropriate" books that I read were anything by R.L. Stine, anything by Roald Dahl, anything by Louis Sachar (Holes and the Wayside School books mostly),Depending on how mature the 5th graders are and how ok the parents are you could consider the Harry Potter books and possibly The Book Thief. The Percy Jackson series could also be good. Heidi, Anne of Green Gables, anything by Shel Silverstein (Especially The Giving Tree), The Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers, Julie of the Wolves, The Phantom Tollbooth (which to this day is still one of my favourites), The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and possibly again depending on parents and how mature they are The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants series. For younger kids, I know I enjoyed The Rainbow Fish and books similar to that.
That's all I've got for now and most of that was just looking through my bookshelf.
OH! And the A Series of Unfortunate Events series.
